(Post was New Forest newbies)

Thanks for the recent kind info on the New Forest. There are obviously many more things to see and do than I anticipated. I know we'll be visiting the area much more, but for a first visit:

What's your top five, must see/do?

Cheers

Steve

Walking and wildlife watching.  Don't do anything else when we are down there, but then we do not have children to entertain. That said my nephew used to love coming down there with me when he was between the age of 7 and 10.

We love Moors Valley too and also Hegnesbury Head near Christchurch, is a brilliant sandy beach.  We also know of a stream somewhere in the middle of the forest that the kids can paddle in, spent some lovely times there, having a picnic and paddle.

with kids in tow these are some of the things we do

try West moors for older kids there is a high wire trail that you have to book in advance, boat from Keyhaven to Hurst castle, Exbury gardens (lots of paths to run around on and steam train), Paultons park amusement park ideal for kids under 8 as plenty to go on.... there is loads around.

If shopping's your thing, go to Hythe and catch the ferry across to Southampton. There is an old train that takes passengers along a ricketty old pier to the ferry. On arrival in Southampton ( about 20 mins later ) head for West Quay shopping centre.

We just got back from there!
Try to find the National Trust area just north of Ringwood, off the A338, called Rockford Common, free parking, there is a beautiful stream where we spent a hot afternoon with the kids and dog.
Loads of foals and ponies came to drink from the stream, followed by cattle with huge horns. All mixed with kids, dogs and people picnicking - heaven on a summer afternoon!!

Moors Valley is good, but be prepared for the expensive parking and our two loved Alice in Wonderland!

Hmm..... Theres loads!

Burley - cider tasting, wagonette rides, cycle hire to explore the forest and loads of quirky shops. And a pub!

Ringwood - Some nice little shops,

Lyndhurst - A Must - Centre of the forest, visitor centre.

Brockenhurst - Mainline station to London in an hour 20 mins.

Fordingbridge- more shops!

Moors Valley - I highly recommend the go ape high wire course!  It's brilliant!  Also has a little train, lakes, woodland trails etc.  Worth the parking charge.

Paultons Park / Alice in Wonderland - Great for little people.

Beaulieu motor museum

Exbury Gardens

Bucklers Hard

However, I'd recommend going for a nice long walk (Take an orange OL map and chose a route that takes you slightly off the beaten track) 90% of visitors don't wander further than 100 metres from their car!  I personally love matley heath.

Hire cycles and make use of the 170 miles of gravel cycle tracks.

Go horseriding, theres loads of riding schools

If you fancy going slightly further afield...

Catch the ferry to the isle of wight

Portsmouth historic dock yard

Bournemouth beach

Poole harbour

Southampton shopping

Winchester and Salisbury cathedral cities

Stonehenge

Sailing

Too much choice maybe!
