Hi,

I did a bit of internet perusing for "campfire recipes" as the site we are going to next week allows campfires and we thought it might be a giggle. The best practical advice was from a Scout group  - we'll be taking plenty of tinfoil! - but I was surprised at the number of campfire cooking books that came up, admittedly mostly American. Has anyone ever used a campfire cookbook and did they think it was worth the outlay?

Good question Angie - will be following this thread.

Perhaps us UKCS members could submit recipes and someone make our own campfire cookbook?

I found this one - "The Campfire Cookbook: Recipes for the Outdoors"  - and ordered it from Amazon, it'll be here in time to take with us. I liked the variety of recipes and that it wasn't American (all of the books seemed to be, the ingredient names vary).  I did look at the recipes section on this site, but apart from a couple, most seemed to involve lots of tinned food which we don't eat.

I'll let you know hwo good the book is Fruity!

We're going to Glyn Y Mul Farm http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=4636 in Aberdulais north of Neath and just south of the Brecon Beacons. Campfires are welcomed as is wild camping in their woods but there's also loos & showers for the fussy ones like me! Our 4 year old is looking forward to his first go at fishing, not sure how upset he'll be if nothing gets caught ..

Hi Angie,

My dad recently bought me a book called The Happy Campers, which was loads of fun to read, with lots of different camping/fun ideas in it!   Within the book there was a section advising how to cook on a campfire followed by loads of different recipes.

Basically you build a fire in the ground the same as normal, but leave a section to the side, which, once the fire is going really well, you move some of the embers over, into that section.  Once you have done so, you can cook on that, just like you would cook onto a bbq!   We tried this out a couple of weeks ago and had the most delicious jacket potatoes that we have ever eaten.   Of course, you could do with some kind of bbq grill too if you want to cook over the coals, you simply need to find a few rocks to rest the grill on either side of your ember section of the fire.

You can therefore cook anything you wish to, just like you do on a bbq.  Of course pans can also be used directly on the embers too.

The whole thing is easy really, if only you can find enough wood to keep your fire going, once you've got it started.

One recipe which I am going to try next week, when we go to Anglesey, is to take a whole Camembert and removing the wrapper.  You place the cheese back in the box, wrap in foil and heat in the embers.   The cheese inside will melt within the skin so you can then open it up and dip whatever the heck you like in it.   Yummmmm.

Have fun!

P.S. Just looking for the name of the authors of this book, and found they have a web-site......www.thehappycampers.co.uk

P.P.S.  Does anyone know if there are any rules/regulations in building campfires on beaches - particularly in Anglesey?

Hi Lizz, thanks for that. Very useful bit about building a side bit, because we'd learned that you need to let the fire die down to cook in the embers, but your way means we can keep the fire going. I'd seen 'The Happy Campers' and seen good reviews, but I was looking for just a cooking book rather than a camping book. Glad to hear it's good though, it does look like a "lifestyle" book!

Have just been reading the Food Mag that comes with our Sunday Paper and there's mention of a book called The Cool Camping Cookbook by Tom Tuke-Hastings, Nadia Shireen, Shellani Gupta & Jonathan Knight costing £12.95 by Punk publishing.

it would be a partner to the 'Cool Camping' book, I didn't read that, I gleaned enough about it from this site  - is it a good book?  Next time I'm in a bookshop I'll have a look for the Cookbook one, but to be honest I just adapt one or two pot recipes from home, 'Mummys mixes' is what the general term is!

Happy Campers book is worth it just for the recipes.  Have you tried the Polenta loaf Lizz? It is the biz.  I lived off it for the first three days of my hols!

My book arrived and I used it during our trip. Admittedly not on the campfire as they were made in beer barrels sawn in half and I forgot to pack a metal rack, but the one-pot and 'gourmet' recipes were brilliant. I also liked the dry mixes you can do to carry with you and the suggested list of things to take for short & long trips. The recipes are adaptable, I made a couple of changes and they also mention a 'Dutch Oven' which I've never heard of. My sister has now borrowed it for their trip to Scotland. I highly recommend it!!

I don't know whether anyone would find this useful/interesting Grillput Grill and fire bowl
If you enjoy travelling through natural surroundings, appreciate true values, love clarity and have an eye for detail, grilliput is going to become your little companion. On account of its compact size it can be stowed anywhere.

Even setting it up is fun and the ample grill area of 23 cm x 26 cm can cater for several barbecue friends.

An optional fire dish can be used, which also doubles up as a container for the charcoal.
