I'm very new to camping and i'm just getting all my kit together for a trip in a months time. Can anyone give me any times as to what the rules are? I've heard some sites are very strict and others are quite relaxed.

One thing thats bothering me is that we want to be able to sit in or outside the tent having a drink come the evening and not have to be in bed by 10pm! We're not roudy but i dont want to be kicked off the site for talking quietly or enjoying the outdoors at night.

Any advice welcome.

Lee

There are quite a few threads on this so use the search facility above. Every campsite is different but as a general rule quiet time is from 11pm to 7 or 8am. This doesn't mean everyone had to go to bed, just keep the noise to a minimum, bearing in mind that there is just canvas between you and your neighbour, not a brick wall.

You will find the warden will explain quiet times to you when you book so dont worry, you can stay up as late as you want , the only secret is treat everyone as you would like them to treat you and you cant go wrong honest.

have a nice time ok

Hi aeropars. As Steven suggested is the way to go, You will always get the few campers that think 2300hrs is bed time its not you are there to enjoy your stay and should you want to stay up and have a drink and a chat you have every right to, just have a drink chat normal and if anyone complained they should move not you. but if you get the chance when you get there look for a pitch away from all the others That is what I normally do.
Just go and enjoy your stay only people who make excess noise into the early hours will get asked to leave.
And to cut a long story short, If I was sat out in the warm moonlight having a drink and chat to my wife, and someone complained and I was asked to leave I would just say NO I AM NOT GOING, end of story(you know ,squatters rights and all that)

Rex
PS after all that. When I am away camping and we have finished diner and a few glasses of wine ,I am usually ready to go into bed by 2300hrs anyway

totally agree with steven, treat other as you would like them to treat you. Try maybe to keep the noise at a level that other a few meters away from you still can go to bed ( and sleep) at ten if they want. And bear in mind that camping is hugely a family activity and some of the younger ones might really need their sleep by ten. Our daughter is 5 and we have had a problem once or twice with that. It was just too noisy for her to go to sleep. But then we are not talking about a couple of people chatting quietly over a glass of wine, but a group of several adults getting a bit drunk and progressively louder. So please remember the little ones everybody. Otherwise next time I will let her have revenge by making lots of noise as soon as she gets up. Which at the moment I try and curb even beyond the "quiet time" as I realise that others don't have small children and might want a bit of a ly- in on holiday. Ok, rant over.

Love Kerstin

Just got back from 2 weeks at stowford, there were some right noisy gits there, 99% people were fine, for instance there was a group next to us, they came back from the clubhouse at midnight, talking and laughing really loud, then one of the fellas started shouting bogey, him and his mate were doing this for about 45 mins, they kept on talking and laughing really loud till about 2.45am.

TBH If you went to bed at midnight and kept the noise levels to a minimum then i wouldnt see a problem.

although i gotta say the last 2 weeks have been freezing come 9pm.

Just check out the individual park rules when you arrive, each park has different times and slightly different rules.

Remember that the rules are put there so everyone can enjoy their holiday and as everyone is different Park Owners/Wardens have to come up with a general set of rules that suits their particular Park.

Excessive noise could result in eviction - any decent park will allow you to sit out after deadline so long as you do not disturb others around you.

Most folk have been out and about all day and kids are settled and they do not want to listen to someone elses shouted/loud conversation/music etc.

Like others have already said - remember you only have a piece of fabric between you and your neighbours.

If you are disturbed by someone partying or fighting full of drink you should inform the Warden as they do not know what is going on everywhere on the Park at all times.

Nothing can be resolved unless you spill the beans.

Any decent Warden/Manager will have a quiet word with the problem party and will not disclose where that complaint came from - if a party does not settle they will be made to leave a site.

Park Owners like to keep their good customers - one noisy party can clear a campsite in one evening.

Enjoy your camping trips you will find you meet lots of other wonderful people and get to some fantastic places.

Hi all
It all boils down to doing your homework, Massive site like Stowford you should expect noise. These site that have club houses and sell drinks until late in the evening to parties of people who are also away to enjoy themselves. If you like to go to bed early then avoid going to these sites, everybody as the right to find sites that suit them .and all I can say it is your own fault if you find yourself on this type of site, and to complain to a manager may get the offending party a friendly warning. But these party goers are spending more money at the site than the quiet type of camper.
I don't like noisy sites, I don't go to noisy sites.
But if you choose a site that should keep to the quiet rule and get kept up by people enjoying themselves, after all this is what they are doing, then you have every right to ask them to be quite or report them and they will no doubt be warned not to repeat it.
Rex

IMy real point is really not wanting to be kicked off the site for having a quiet chat. As long as they dont expect utter silence then i'm happy.

I don't think any sites would kick you off for having a chat over a few beers or a bottle or three of wine. As long as you're not actually disturbing the other campers, you usually have every right to stay up and enjoy the night sky into the small hours.

As previously mentioned, many camp sites are frequented by families with children and usually have a "quiet time" that starts sometime between 10 and 11pm. But that doesn't mean "lights out, silence, in bed"...it just means keep noise down to a sensible level.

Two years ago we were camping on a site where people came back after midnight excited from the Live 8 festival...but they were all quiet within 30 minutes of getting back and nobody considered that a problem.

100% agree with Rexgrant here, do your homework, does'nt always work, the first family trip we did we thought we had it sussed, the brouchure was very clear on the quiet rule and when we booked in the warden made it very clear, half way through and a small group appeared and drank and laughed until 2am, in the morning we asked if they would'nt mind keeping it down a bit, I think they took the huff as the next night the same again, I then complained to the warden about it and he did sweet nothing, on the third night I went over a gave them so much abuse it actualy worked, but the forth night and again it happend, so we let the kids loose at 5.30am on the day we left, wonder who was left nursing the sore heads. we will never go back to that site again and have put other people we know off from going there. Since then we have been very lucky with the sites we visit, funny I can put up with crying babies ( had two myself) but not the drunk laughing.

You should be OK having a quiet drink and a chat but remember that sound carries a long way on a campsite at night and people can often hear you from quite a long way away.
