Hi

We are new to touring having just sold our static.  The 1st time we went away was to a site called 'RIVER DART COUNTRY PARK'.  What a great place !  Even though there were no arcades, clubhouses etc not once did my kids say they were bored and as soon as it was time to leave asked if we could return again.

We have just returned from our 2nd trip 5 days early due to the site facilities being so disgusting. This ranged from the toilets/showers, food outlets, unable to get seats in the entertainment areas etc etc etc oh....  and I forgot to mention the travellers that arrived on the pitch next to us at 06:15 hrs on Sat morning, with another 2 lots arriving later in the day !!!

So can anyone recommend any similar sites to River Dart, we live in Essex jsut for info.  Whilst at River Dart I took the kids to Woodlands Theme park which also offers touring facilities, does anyone have any comments on thi site ?

Thanks in advance

Hi there I'm afraid I have no ideas about other sites that could match up to River Dart as I am new to camping myself, but just wanted to get rid of your 'blue face'.  We looked at Woodlands but didn't think we would get full enjoyment as kiddies are still quite young.  Yours might be old enough to enjoy it though.  We are going to Stowford Farm, Ilfracombe instead as it has a mini zoo, golf, woodland walks and pool - but may not be quite active enough for your lot compared to River Dart .

Hopefully you will get some good advice soon, pointing you in the right direction.

I have to admit I have never been to a site that is so bad that I pack up early.

We have been to a few bad ones but always make the most of it!

One of my favourite things about camping is planning where we are going to go. If you use the campsite search facility on here you can read reviews of most of the sites and lose yourself for a couple of hours! Claire

I agree with the last post, do your homework before you book, it pays off. As you said your kids enjoyed the site without all the razzamataz, there are a lot of sites out there in forests e.t.c. that are wonderful for kids,  and there is a plus that in the long run it won't cost you so much for arcades e.t.c.

Welcome to the great world of touring.

In 25 years of touring caravanning I have only packed up early once and that was due to awful weather and nothing to do with the site.

To get a good idea of sites available to you may I recommend that you got through the sites review linked to this web site and also take "Practical Caravan Magazine" each month? The magazine carries extensive site listings every month and usually focuses on an area listing the sites available within it.

Good luck.

Vic

I would suggest reading the reviews on here to see what other people have thought of a particular site.

Have you thought of joining either the CC or C&CC at least you know what to expect with the sites.

What was the name of the site, where you returned early from? I take it it's not the River Dart Country Park? Let us all know I for one am intrigued.
