don't think this has been mentioned previously, but if you want to check out the location, layout etc of a site, get it's postcode and have a look at it in Google Maps - http://maps.google.co.uk then click on the satellite or hybrid button on the right hand side, then zoom in to get a birds eye view.

I have used these maps recently for various things, including camping, but they seem to be very out of date for the areas I have been looking at. But they are quite good fun though!!!

You do not need to do that.  Just use the excellent mapping facility on this site. It has maps , ariel shots and birds eye view.

I did this and worried myself sick about our holiday this year!  I looked the site up and saw something next door which looked industrial - then a couple of days before we went I was told it was a sewage farm and it stank!  As it turned out, you didn't notice it at all once you were there but I was on the verge of cancelling for a while.

I use the satellite maps a lot and the view of my own house is about 6 years old - I can tell from the van in the front garden.  It is handy to give you an idea of where you're going though.

I agree that they are all quite old - my caravan site only opened this year in March, (http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=6567) so if you tried google maps, or windows live etc, you only get a 6 year old picture of an empty field!

It is good for planning your route though - you can see which roads to take, what the area is like, and the proximity to York and shops.
