Can't recommend anything in CD but Islecroft in Dalbeattie is worth looking at. It is relaxing but may not be rural enough for you.  Very good value for money and friendly proprietors.

There is a site in Castle Douglas next to a loch and only 5 mins walk into town.It has been a lot of years since we were last there but it was well kept at that time. I think it is managed by the local council.Had clean shower block and toilets and also had EHU...hope this helps

Hi Drm

A lovely part of the world you are going to - enjoy.

I worked in Gatehouse of Fleet for what would now be called a gap-year in the early 1970's and often return.

In Castle Douglas itself there is the Lochside Caravan Park mentioned above.  It is unusual in that it is part of the local town park with lovely views over and walks around the loch.  It has 2 main areas one of which is tarmacced and split into bays - a bit like a carpark and a grassed area which is more free-pitching.  Both areas are open to the park but I have never had any problems with security or noise, etc.  Castle Douglas is a quiet market town but with a lot of character and it is only a few minutes walk away, 5 mins to the excellent chipshop at the southern end of the town.  Tel 01556502949 or 503806.  I last stayed there 2 years ago and have often used it as a night halt whilst travelling through Galloway and/or visiting old friends in CD.

The Park of the Brandleheys is an award winning site but I have never stayed there.  It is in open countryside.

Another super site right by its beach is Mossyard, west of Gatehouse of Fleet.  Its very popular and often fully booked.  A lovely farm site.

Castepoint at Rockcliffe (Tel 01556 630248) on the coast near Dalbeattieis a pleasant site with stupendous view over the village and estuary.  There are some lovely walks along the coast too.  Stayed here for a week 2 years ago.

Other parks in the area area I know of are:

Auchenlarrie near Gatehouse of Fleet.  Holiday Park type of site with lots of statics okay but not my choice.  Can be noisy at bar closing time!!

Brighouse Bay Holiday park near Kirkcudbright.  A large park with lots of facilities and near the beach.  We stayed there a few years back not a favourite of mine but popular with a lot of people.  Quite a long way from the town and the road ends there.

Seaward Park, Kirkcudbright is owned by the same people as Brighouse but is smaller.  It has views over the River estuary to the sea but beach tends to be muddy.

There a number of reviews including mine of some of the above sites in the review section of UK Campsite.  Please post any other questions if you have them and I'll try to answer.

Have a super time in Galloway - i'm jealous.

Regards

Tim

I would'nt go to Loch side at Castle Douglas.  The  toilet facilicities are dreadful especially in the Old block.  I got three nights free after complaining about the state of them.  Also it is very expensive. The best site in the area is either Barlochan at Palnackie or Sandyhills outside Dalbeattie. Kippford Holiday park is very good.  They are all in walking distance to Dalbeattie Forest.  You have everything there from walking cycling or just lazing about.
