I recall camping in Scotland with my parents donkeys years ago, and found a lovely site, the wind and the rain were getting worse, but we found a site, which had loads of trees around which gave us great shelter from the wind, it began to get dark and the wind was getting worse but we were so secluded it didn't bother us, then about 2AM the night sleeper train passed us about 20 yards away....... certainly made the ground shake and us ! ... and we had booked in for a couple more nights...

Also springs to mind ! our first USA camping trip...took tent etc with us on aircraft and was camping in Grand Teton NP our first night camping in USA,set up tent and went out for evening meal to Jackson Hole, Mrs wasn't feeling to well, and I got ratty with her, she just wanted to return to tent, so we did and on our return the campsite looked like someone had just come along with a chainsaw and chopped down most of the trees.... but the wind was up and this had brought them down... slept in the car that night ! but didn't put us off one bit... had several more trips but then children arrived, wcan't wait to take them when they are a little older !
can thoroughly recommend it ! Get into the Nat Parks and enjoy !!!!!!
What a crazy night you had. I'm from the east coast and the winds aren't too bad unless there is a hurricane coming in. Just took up camping here in the UK and I love it here as well.
How old are you children? My youngest is 2 and he loves tenting and can't wait to go. When we're at the tent store, he has to try out every one...and when I say that, I mean every one as in laying down and getting a feel for it. He'll even zip himself in the one man tent. We have a great laugh and have to admit we love looking at the tents as well.
.. camped around/in smoky mountains, wasn't as nice as the NP's in utah,montana,wyoming..and the waterton/glacier NP on us/canadian border. also camped in Banff and jasper in canada
the wildlife is superb but a little scary when camping in bear country ! just have to be aware that they may turn up unannounced !
kids are 8 and 4 so a couple more years for he younger one yet,
has anyone taken tent etc recently on flights ?
------------- ...the best place for a picnic is usually a little further on !!!!!!!
