We go to Christchurch campsite - it is a Forestry Commission site (see www. forest-holidays.co.uk). It is one of three sites in the vicinity. Dogs are not allowed on Christchurch but they are on Bracelands which is down the road. Christchurch has the shop and reception and kids play area. Bracelands and Woodlands are sites without shops. Woodlands has no facilities at all apart from EHU so you need it all in your van.
You can walk to Biblins Bridge and then on to Symonds Yat (there is a good pub at the Saracens Head by the river). You can then climb to the top of Yat Rock for the views which IMO are some of the best in the UK! That round trip walk is about 5 miles and takes the day with a good stop at the pub.
There is loads of other stuff to do. You can cycle or drive to Monmouth (parking is £1.80 for 4 hours there opposite Waitrose. It is a nice town to wander around.
There is the Scuplture Trail which is brilliant for walking or cycling around. It starts from Beechenhurst Lodge. It is good one for kids as there are loads of shortcuts.
Then there are Cannop Ponds, the Dean Forest Railway, Lydney, Chepstow etc. Loads to do and see and never boring.
Oh yes and the campsite has a pub that you can walk to just five minutes though the Forest that has good food and real ales (The Kings Head). The owners are really friendly and don't mind children. A must try!!
