Hi fellow campers.

Really interested in camping on the isles of scilly next year, just have a few concerns...

1 - Can we take all the things we normally would? i.e gas bottle for cooker?

2 - Are the ferry company going to charge extra for all camping gear?

3 - Have very large tent - would we be better off with something smaller for this trip?

sorry about all the questions, look forward to the replies

You will have problems with the gas bottle, I was checked every time a boarded a ferry when touring the Scottish Islands last year. Is it a cannister type you can buy over there or a rechargable? I used a petrol stove on my travels around the world this summer which ment all I had to do was wash out the tank in soapy water before each ferry/plane.

You shouldn't get charged any extra for camping gear, would look into it first though. What you may have to bear in mind however is the Bio control inspections even though the Scilles are British land. Mind you the uk is useless on that score anyway as I found.

If just yourself or two of you I'd say degrade on the tent size a little yes, it can become a hassle lugging around a 6 berth as I found out last year unless you have lots of space!

Get out there!

Yes the ferry's shape means it does roll rather a lot in the water.

Hi this is quite an old thread, but my question is very similar to the ones before. I am also planning, finally after years of camping in st ives, to cross the water to the Scillys. I am wondering whether, as first time visitor and comfort camper to stay in st mary;s, though i much prefer the look of the campsite at st martins. I am amazed though to see from their website photos that people have managed to get frame tents and plastic chairs to the site. I know there are containers to carry stuff to st mary;s but how easy is it to get a large tent cooker chairs etc etc over to the smaller islands? I am willing to make some compromises on comfort - will be leaving the outwell utah and have bought an outwell arizona in anticipation, but lamp, cooker, and yes chairs and table, all add up. Any thoughts and suggestions welcome thanks.

Hi Fant,

Yes it is an old thread!

It is very easy to get pretty much anything over to the smaller off islands (ie not St.Mary's). I'm always amazed at how much stuff people take although I travel fairly light myself. You off load your luggage on the quay at Penzance straight into containers, for each island. You don't see your luggage again until you reach St.Martin's/St.Agnes or Bryher. When the Scillonian docks in St.Mary's the small off island boats pull alongside and luggage is transferred direct for you by the boatmen. This is all done while you wait on S.Mary's quay after docking at about 12.00pm (weather permitting!) The boats (Voyager for St.Martin's, Firethorn for Bryher and Spirit of St.Agnes for Agnes) then pull back alongside the quay for you to board at 12.30pm to go to the off islands. When you get to, say St.Martin's the campsite owner meets you on the quay with a tractor towing a large cage. At this point you are expected to help form a chain to off load luggage onto the trailer!!! Its then towed to the site for you while you walk!

The only thing to consider really is each pack size/weight as all luggage has to be manhandled by boatmen as well as yourself so lots of smaller bags are better than one huge one. You can take trailers over and a lot of people with large frame tents that camp in the summer do this. People that don't have trailers just have lots of bags!!!

Another thing is the quay in Penzance(only small) gets rather busy with everyone trying to back cars down to off load bags so would recommend getting there early( dockers arrive from 7.30am) if you have a lot of luggage. Then gives you time to take the car to the longstay carpark which you do need to book.

Personally I would never  camp on St.Mary's as it is too similar to the mainland for me. St.Martin's has beautiful beaches and a very laid back feel to it. The site details on here mention a shop near to the site but this is wrong as that shut a couple of years ago. The nearest (only) shop/post office is a good 1500 metres from the site.

St.Agnes is also great but perhaps not for a first trip because I presume you will want to visit all the other islands and it is more remote making day trips to the other islands a little longer.

Don't know when you are planning to go but it books up early. You'll have no problem outside the summer holidays though. If you can't get in on St.Martin's there is Bryher. This site never did it for me but beautiful island and excellent boat service for visiting the other islands.

If you camp on one of the off islands first you will never want to camp on St.Mary's.....if you camp on St.Marys first you wont know what you are missing and so still have a fab time!!!

Sorry it's a bit rambling...I do love it...I'm off to St.Agnes in July.

Thank you very much for this reply, it clears up my reservation that we would have to unload at St Mary's and then load up again for St Martins. I dont mind mainland Cornwall at all ( we usually stay on the st ives peninsular)   but since we want a different experience this year, I will be contacting St Martins campsite very soon
all the best

Hi fant,

I love mainland Cornwall as well, it is beautiful, as is St.Mary's.

What I was trying to say was it's a totally different experience camping on the off islands. It is very quiet, not for everyone but I love it.  Because you can see/hear the sea from anywhere you're really 'aware' you are on a tiny island in the Atlantic!  It's this romantic notion that appeals to me!

Hope you manage to get in and have a fab time if you go.

As mentioned before though, don't forget seasickness tablets/wristbands!
