Can anyone recommend a good site in the Isle of Wight - we're not fussy about where abouts.
We often go to Camping and Caravanning Club Sites but these are getting rather expensive now we have a family of 4 and have to go during peak season!!!
We're not fussed with fancy facilities - just a warm shower and a clean loo will be fine. Good scenery would be a plus too.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

We spent a week at Southlands Camping & Caravan Site really enjoyed it, it is quite big, but is split into sections, so felt smaller, the toilets where clean and plenty of hot water, also wash up facilities, laundry and wifi which went down well with our 14 year old. I thought the Isle of wight was lovely, Sandown, the donkey sactuary, amozon world, we went round the whole island and thought we had picked the best area. Near to us was The Old Barn Campsite, that looks fine, there was a supermarket within 2 mins drive and Sandown only 5 mins away.
Its a lovely Island and we will go again in a few years.

Thanks Shirley. I looked at Southland's www and it looked lovely. I've also looked at other sites in the Isle of Wight now and the prices seem to be even higher than C&C club so maybe we'll stick with them for now! I remember the days when we'd pay a max of £10 a night in high season! Now its more like £17 minimum!!
Gone are the days when we could just grab our tents and spend a weekend under canvas! Paying for 4 of us means its a luxury we can no longer afford!
Thanks again x

Hi Sarah, We went with Red Funnel last August from Southhampton to Cowes with our car and caravan it cost about £170, hope that helps. We went on the onest crossing so I am sure the shorter ones would be less.

We stayed at The Orchards a couple of years ago & were very impressed with it.
The quality was excellent. The countryside views were breathtaking. It's near Yarmouth (where the ferry docks from Lymington) & the site organised all the necessary paperwork for te ferry when I booked the pitch.
There's indoor & outdoor pools, a games room & play area which kept me & the little'un busy while 'er indoors read books, watched soaps etc.
The shop was very well stocked & there was a take away on site which opened both for breakfast & in the evening.
Good luck

Hi Milkshake
I can reccommend quite a few different sites as I have stayed at a lot of them. I have lived on the Island for 20 years and stay for long weekends at different sites when we can't afford a ferry crossing (The only drawback to living on an island!).
It depends what type of site you are after. If you want nightlife and loads to do for kids then there are three haven sites, Thorness Bay (near Cowes), Nodes Point (near Seaview) or Lower Hyde (Shanklin) There is also Whitecliff Bay (Bembridge) which is the same type of site. Adgestone is a camping and caravanning club site and offers lots for kids too.
We prefer the peaceful sites and can highly reccommend Whitefield Forest (Between Ryde and Brading) This is a new site and it has been cut into a forest and is really clean and friendly. The only thing I could say was a downside is that if blues and twos go by or boy racers then they can be quite noisy, but that has only happened twice in three stays there. Another lovely site is Heathfield Farm (Freshwater) again lovely and quiet when we were there and lots of lovely walks from the site which suited us well.
I could go on for ever so if you reply and let me know what sort of sites you prefer then I will reccommend a few more
Regards
Nigel

Thanks Nigel! We went to Adgestone in summer 06 ago and loved it - considering returning there but just wondered what others were recommended.
We don't want a Haven or anything with night life. We have two children (3 and 5) who *should* be in bed by 8pm (here's hoping!) so we would like somewhere where we can sit outside the tent in the evening and relax peacefully!
A pool would be nice but certainly not essential. An onsite shop - or at least a reception where we can get milk would be handy... a nice view maybe??
Other than that we don't really have any other requirements. Just nice and clean and friendly.
We also have a big tent so somewhere where that isn't a problem.
Thanks again!

Hi Milkshake,
We have stayed at the orchards a few times as it is one of the only sites on the island which is open all year. There isn't a restaurant but they do have a rather good takeaway. indoor and outdoor pools and a games room. There wasn't a bar open when I have stayed but they do have a type of function room above the shop, which was being used by the motorcaravanners club so perhaps this becomes the bar in the summer. I can highly reccommend a pub called the Horse & Groom at Ningwood which is just a couple of miles up the road. The food there was wonderful. There are also plenty of footpaths to take the dog along ( The Isle of Wight is supposed to have more footpaths than any other county in England, hence the annual walking festival every May).
We certainly enjoy staying at The Orchards and I'm sure you get a discount if you are caravan club members though I'm not sure how much. The staff are very friendly and the showers and toilets are a little dated but spotlessly clean and the showers are the type where you don't have to keep pressing the damn button in!
If you contact the orchards, I'm sure they will book the ferry at reasonable rates for you but always check both red funnel and wightlink as sometimes offers are posted on their websites. We have always found red funnel to be cheaper overall but Wightlink have the better offers and is easier to get in and out of. Try and plan your route through the New Forest and go from Lymington the scenery and wildlife is second to none!
Regards Nigel.
