I was wondering can anyone offer some suggestions for sites that will cater for a family activity break ? This would be for a week in a tent in mid-August.

Locations are within about 2.5 hrs from the ferry ports of Holyhead or Stranraer. So that limits us to South West Scotland, North Lake District and North Wales (maybe parts of Cheshire or Shropshire at a pinch).

Main requirements (either on-site or within walking distance) are as much of these as possible - playground, sports field, crazy golf, tennis or table tennis, swimming, pony-trekking, canoeing (canoe hire required), walking, par 3 golf, some sort of restaurant (needn't be grand). If there's some (feathered) birdwatching available then so much the better. None of these things need to be top notch - we dabble in lots of things a little and definitely don't excel in any  The more rural and smaller the site the better too - although obviously the more facilities the bigger the site will be. Clean toilets and showers are a must.

We don't need an all-dancing site with entertainment - if the site has that sort of thing then fine, as long as it's nice and quiet after 11pm or so.

So far it looks like Brighouse Bay (Kircudbright), Beddgelert Forest Holidays site and Park Foot (Ullswater) fit the bill. Anyone have any more ideas ? Or any problems with those 3 ?

hey we have just book an action packed holiday with haven. i know this sounds a bit funny possibly but i am sure if u grab a haven book from somewhere locally then there will be many options there. haven is good for family holidays and have entertainment night and day to cater the whole family. hope this helps a little.

I would recommend Brighouse Bay in Kirkcudbright. Although it is only 25 miles from our house we visit it quite often here is a list of activities on site.

18 hole golf .9 hole par 3 , driving range.9 hole putting green.

Pony treking advise booking on arrival.

Quad bike(hight restictions)

Indoor heated swimming pool. £6 for family.2 bowling alleys games room.

Bar and resturant and bistro/cafe.

Otter pools and 2 fishing ponds, small canoe pond (canoes for hire.

Quite a big play area and also a lovely beach.

If you drive about 5 miles from site you can go to Cream Of Galloway check their web site if you have kids they will love it here as it has an adventure play area built in the trees and beautiful ice cream, also has a cafe which is lovely but can be expensive but they allow you to take a picnic into the straw barn to eat.

And if you travel to Kirkcudbright they have a small zoo/wildlife park and also loads of local shops and cafe's.

We actually site or van there over the winter to save hassle of towing and use it most weekends my 10 year old daughter loves it. The clubhouse is at the top of the site and away from all tents and tourers so dont get much noise from it.
