My partner and I both found ourselves unemployed as a result of the recession and went camping at a lovely little site in Langworth near Lincoln. My partner got talking to the warden couple on the site so we decided that with our mix of skills from previous employment and our love of camping/caravanning it would be a great opportunity to start a new path in our lives.
For the past 6 months we have been living in our caravan and applying for all the available jobs. It has been quite an experience, a steep learning curve that has led us to discover that even with our mix of skills in landscape gardening and administration that many caravan park owners are not prepared to see past what they see as our "inexperience".
Mark and I are very friendly outgoing people who love to meet new people and we believe we have the exact skills required to fit into a holiday park staff team as a warden couple. We understand that given the choice of a couple with experience and us the odds are against us. However, we are left somewhat frustrated that we keep having interviews only to find we are pipped at the post with the position being given to someone experienced.
We are determined to keep on applying in the hope that someone will see past the veil of inexperience and see us as a couple with bags of life experience, motivation and no fear of hard work.
We are often told that people see caravanhn wardenning posts through rose tinted glasses. We arent wearing those glasses. We realise its very hard work but believe a new challenge is just what we need.
Caravan site owners obviously need to choose the right couple when they are searching for wardens. All we would like to ask for is that they look beyond "inexperience" and see what other skills we can bring.
