Has anyone been to Seathwaite Farm Campsite recently?  I have stayed here a couple of times before but a few years ago now. It's in the Borrowdale valley at the start of the walk up to Scafell Pikes, Cumbria.  I have had a good look on the net but I've been unable to find any evidence it's actually still a campsite.  I'm wanting to walk ScaFell Pikes again soon and would like to stay at Seathwaite Farm campsite.  If anyone has any information about this campsite please reply.  Thanks.

Are you thinking of Stonethwaite farm near Seathwaite?

I used to camp there years ago, and I have been both flooded out and blown out, lots of happy memories.  We once camped there for Christmas and as far as I know it is still open.

Closer but no it's definatly Seathwaite.  I remember there being a small carpark just at the end of the little road leading up to the farm.  There are public toilets and a telephone box here aswell.  As I remember it it's a really basic site ie just a field to pitch a tent and the use of a shower connected to one of the farm buildings.  I remember having to pass through an archway in the farm complex then up a track towards the river.  It would be easy to miss if you didn't know it was there I stayed there with school many years back so I knew it was there when I stayed there just a few years ago.

Sorry I carn't help with the seathwaite campsite, but we stayed at Eskdale campsite on the other side of the hills and you can walk up Scarfell pike from there, it takes longer to get to the campsite but its in a really great spot.

That definitely sounds like Stonethwaite Farm.  I have been camping and walking around there for over forty years and I cannot remember a campsite at Seathwaite.

Seathwaite and Stonethwaite farms are very similar to each other.

I found a vague reference to the campsite I mean on another website http://www.blencathra.org/walks/20040615.htm  this article was written about the same time I stayed there last I think so still no proof it's still going.

I also found this extract from a year 8 geography document:

Profits on hill farms like this are very low and many such farms would be forced to close if it were not for the subsidies from the government and the E.C. At Seathwaite Farm some extra money is made in the summer from a small campsite and by providing (delicious - I know!) cream teas  & and other snacks to passing tourists. At another local farm (Seatoller), there is a campsite which brings in a little extra money.

From what I can see this was written in 2001 so once again no confirmation it still exists.  I'm very eager to see if it does still exist as a camp site, I have such lovely memories of the place, I would love to go back.  I remember seeing the Northern lights there for the first time on a school trip back in the day.

The campsite is still there, and is just how you remember it, with the toilets, phonebox and teashop.  I was up there a fortnight ago, and although I wasn't brave enough to camp in Feb, someone was as their was a large family tent pitched up!

It certainly is the wettest campsite I've stayed on, but that is made up for by the beauty of the surroundings.
