Hello

We would really like to know if anyone has been to Coast View in Shaldon Devon in a touring caravan.  We have camped there several times and have now got a caravan.  From memory there seemed to be lots of scrape marks on the road as if caravans had been grounded getting up the hill into the site.  Have not seen many touring caravans whilst there, but never really took that much attention.  We would love to go back but are not sure if the hill is too much for a caravan - it goes from flat to steep quickly and we dont want to trash the van.

Thanks for taking time to read

Tristan

Tristan
We have been visiting this site for 20 odd years, but always stayed in the fixed caravans. We started touring with our own van two years ago but have not been back to the site even though we love it!

The fear of that entrance hill was enough for us. Most of the reviews on this website are from campers in tents rather than caravans apart from one. So maybe others have been afraid to attempt that hill as well. Just imagine having to stop halfway up it as well. Maybe you could call the site and ask for advice from them. Personally I wouldn't risk it! Good luck. Mandy

The entrance is what is scaring us - although if we could get up the hill - the views would be worth it - but maybe not worth the risk in the caravan - dont fancy a hill start!  We still have the tent as could'nt quite part with it (brand new last year) before wife decided to get a caravan.

We love the site so much and the views are amazing so we will call the site but I think it will be using the tent for us and the caravan for other holidays.  This would only be in summer (if we get one).  We travelled to coast view last year in the week of the summer floods and stayed in a starfish accomadation - quite expensive but there was no way we were taking the tent after it had rained for weeks on end - now we have the caravan dont want to pay to stay in someone elses on site.

Thanks again for the reply.

Tristan

hi, i took our van there last year..... although there are lots of scrapes on entrance it is possible to get in without any problems - just take it wide and slow and you will be ok. One other thing to consider however is the damage you can do to your clutch - in order to book in you need to stop on the hill ( if you been before you know what i mean ) my memory of my stay is the amount of burnt out clutches you could smell. i myself drive an automatic pajero and had no problems at all.

Thanks for the reply - hobby-05- being local to the area do you know any other nice sites with similar views - we really like the area, teignmouth, shaldon, torquay etc - its just we have been staying at coast view for years and not tried others in the area - would really appreciate any opinions - preferably not too large scale but with enough to do for the kids

Thanks again for the reply

Tristan

Thanks for the replies  - lots to be going on there. At work at the moment will have a good look at the sites mentioned when home.  We have been to Woodlands for a day out and it was great, seem to recall access roads quite bendy and narrow, although not 100% sure.

Thanks again,

Tristan

Hi - we live just over the hill from Shaldon, so don't know the campsites very well (got a house to sleep in )  But we drive past

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=2779

This one and the views look lovely - across the river and only about a five minute drive into Teignmouth, then you can either get the foot ferry over or just go over the Shaldon Bridge (and try to park!)

Tristan
2 other parks I know of in that area are:
Wear Farm http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=2779

Teignfield Caravan Park http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=7613

Haven't been to either but both are along the river rather than up on the hill side.
