Just a bit further on the A75 towards stranraer is a site called auchenlarie, about 2 miles past gatehouse of fleet, i've been going there since i was a nipper and booked again for july, it has just about every thing you could wish for, pub, Restaurant, gym, swimming pool, evening entertainment, it's own beach, play area's, shop, laundrette, recommend this site to anyone.

Hi Jadie
I worked and lived in the South West of Scotland in the mid-70's - what would now be called a gap year!!! I was a porter at the Murray Arms Hotel in Gatehouse of Fleet and a waiter at the Baron's Craig Hotel in Rockcliffe.
I have had great pleasure over the years in introducing my wife and children to the area. I am a person who likes quieter sites and my recommendations are in that vein!! I've borne in mind the ages of your children.
Going from East to West.
Castle Point at Rockliffe - overlooking beautiful bay with beaches in walking distance
Drummockloch, Gatehouse of Fleet - A Caravan Club CL which is part of the Cardoness estate. This upmarket estate includes a number of static vans and holiday lets in a wooded estate bordering a fantastic, unspoilt beach just west of Gatehouse on the A75. No phone number just email Mark at hannay at freeserve.co.uk according to the CC handbook but I think maybe that should be Mark.hannay!!
Mossyard Caravan Park, G of F. Near to the above. A farm site with access to its own private bay. This is a lovely site which tends to get booked-up at peak times, with returning regulars I think
Much further west is the CC site at New England Bay. Right on a lovely safe beach with a number of interesting places to visit nearby.
I must say that I would NOT recommend Auchenlarrie, sorry Micky1975, although I know it well. It is a busy commercial site mainly given over to statics. We stayed a couple of years back and were unimpressed. The touring pitches were arrange in circular areas and most of the pitches were sloping. We found the site to be rather noisy at night and were woken several times by folk rowdily making their way home from the bar.
Brighouse Bay, near Kirkcudbright is not one of my recommendations. It is okay we did stay there a few years back It too has a lot of facilities and is near the beach but a little quieter than Auchelarrie. It is rather remote and involves driving along a lot of country roads. Again a bit on the big, commercial side for my taste. There are, also, sites owned by the same company at Sandyhills near Dalbeattie. This is a smaller site near to a good beach. Seaward Caravan Park, near Kirkcudbright. This overlooks the river estuary below Kirkcudbright. There is a beach nearby with an interesting shipwreck but the beach tends to be a bit muddy.
There are reviews, including mine, for most of the above sites in the campsite search section of UKC.
There is lots to do in the South West including:
Ice Cream Farm nr Gatehouse with aerial cableway.
Mull of Galloway Lighthouse
Mill on the Fleet, Gatehouse
Lots of Castles including Cardoness, Threave, Kirkcubright
Miles of unpoilt beaches
Enroute into the South West we often stop for a night halt at the Lochside Caravan Park in Castle Douglas. This council owned site is unusual in that it is a tarred section of the town park. The site overlooks the lovely Carlingwark Loch.
I hope this helps I LOVE Dumfries and Galloway. Please post again if you have further questions.
