Hi Everyone,

Were off to Southport CC site on Friday and as we have never been here or even to Southport before i was wondering if any of you could shed some light on the place?, Some people have told me that Southport is not too great and others tell me it's been revamped now and is a fantastic place to go. But  the main thing is it's our first trip of the year and once were in the van nothing else matters.

love southport its a great place for walks, has the largest beach i have ever seen to walk on.we have friends that live there so go regular for a visit.just higher up from site there is a park and ride for a £1,parking in southport is  pig and the wardens are red hot.one was going to book us and we only went a few yards to get the ticket from the machine.it has a revamped shopping centre and a nice park.if you are of the age of the bus pass,go to liverpool from there its nice.

The last time we went to Southport (the town itself) we couldn't get in! We hadn't been for ages prior to that and one Sunday about 5 years ago decided to go on the spur of the moment. On the approach into Southport we got stuck in a horrendous tail-back of traffic, and it was only when we were almost there we realised why - it was the weekend of the air show. We drove round for ages trying to find somewhere to park - every car park and parking space was full and anyone who had a spare bit of land had turned it into a car park and was charging £10 for the privelage. OH just said "F*** that!" and turned the car round, we came straight back home again and we haven't been since. We do have friends who go to the CC site though and they say it's nice, also ideal for the air show as you can see everything from there.

Hi,

We went last October to the CC site and the site itselfs is very nice the wardens very friendly and helpful.....we used the bus from the park and ride and didn't have to pay a penny the wardens told us this is ok to do as the park and ride is only a short walk from the site......the park adjcent is nice for a stroll if you have a dog....and on a sunday they have those small trains out that you can sit on and they take you round for a small donation....  The pleasure Beach is probably the most awful thing you will see it really does look a horrible mess thanks to the owners of Blackpool Pleasure Beach who signed its death warrant (which is another story)....there are rides there but it does look very sad......there is a small railway which will will take you you to the new pier or you can walk.......the shops in Southport are very nice and the town is clean....Morrisons is a walk away too.....

I think suzzie says it all, but just to add that the best TV/SAT reception is to the right near the exit barrier,as you get to pick your own pitch i suggest as you go through the entry barrier go right & follow it round

Much depends on what you are after.   The site itself is supposed to be lovely.
You can walk around the Marine Lake, or along the prom weather permitting.
Providing it is still there, take a walk along the pier to the building at the end, and play on the old fashioned amusement - you get your proper pennies from the machines and have fun.
There is a temporary fair, but I've not heard what it is like.
It is worth taking a drive to Formby to see the red squirrels, and even if you don't see any, the walk through the woods is nice.   We went over the Easter holidays and only saw one squirrel, which is unusual, as we usually see quite a few.
Of a Sunday, the model railway club (next to the site) usually run their trains, and you can have a ride on one of these.  (From abour 2-o-clock.)

The bus from the park and ride is just up the road from the site, couple of hundred yards, it is free to walk on pasengers you only pay if you are parking a car.

Hi Granty

I work in Southport for the past year and I would say that has well changed since I last spent anytime there.

It's got plenty of shops, bars, restaurants etc...  The seafront and beach is much improved...

Not too sure where you are staying in Southport, but I think it's well worth a walk around!

Enjoy!

The site is great, typical CC site very clean and good size pitches.  The park behind is a great short cut to Morrisons / Town Centre (this is were the Southport Flower Show is held every year). They have just opened a great indoor water park with flume etc. Lord Street in the town has some nice shops and cafes/restaurants with the normal pub chains Weatherspoons etc.  Also just along the beach front is another shopping centre and bowling alley which has Frankie and Benny's and various other restaurants.  The park and ride is just outside the site which can take you to various places, Liverpool is about 40 mins drive away or use the park and ride.  The train station can take you up and down the coast, Formby, Freshfield, Hightown, Crosby and this train takes you directly into Liverpool.  Its probably about a 25 min walk from the site to the train station but a nice one. Have a great time!!!

Love Southport and the site is very handy for the town and Morrisons (great cooked breakfast).  Beach is neverending but don't expect to paddle as the sea is way out (although have seen it when it was in three times)  usually.  The CC site has all the usual amenities but is practical rather than 'pretty' - only place we've fed a wild rabbit from our hand.

If you're in theis area the Anthony Gormley 'Another Time, Another Place' staues on Crosby beach are worth a visit, if only for being unusual.  Formby has some lovely walks but you do have to pay to park.

If you do want to visit Another Place, please check the tide times as the statues are totally covered when the tide is in.

I totally forgot about this fact about 18 months ago, when I took my aunty and uncle down to see the statues.       Because they are only at the bottom of the road, if the tide is in, its' not a problem,  I've gone for a walk not to see the statues.   However if you have come to see the statues, it would be disappointing not to see them because you'd mistimed your visit with the tides.
