That's something which you'll learn quickly: due to its popularity, camping, caravanning and motorhoming is now not quite as carefree in that way as it once was. When we first started out with a tent, about 30+ years ago (I know, that was in the last century and seems ages ago now!), we often decided on the last minute to go away for the weekend, packed up the tent and everything else, set off on Friday evening and more often than not, went up to the Lakes and just called in at the first site we fancied. And there was never a problem, you could always get in.
Nowadays, many sites are booked up months in advance for all weekends, let alone Bank Holiday weekends.
One suggestion I would make is: are you members of the Camping and Caravanning Club?
http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/
Although their sites will be booked up more than likely too , they operate what is called Certificated Sites. They are small sites, often on a farm, or even in somebody's (huge) backgarden, at the back of a pub, or anywhere like that. They are licenced to take 5 caravans, plus tents, but their facilities are often minimal. Some only have a WC, some not even that, others will have WC, shower and electric hook-up. Have a read on the link I have posted for them.
They often have space when the main sites haven't, so maybe worth a try.
As for Yorkshire, there is a site just outside Appletreewick, near Burnsall, but I can't remember the name of it. It's by the river, or perhaps you have already tried that one?
Anyway, good luck, and perhaps it's worth booking another few weekends further into summer now, to make sure you get something!

Many thanks Ina, my Girlfriends parents I think are members , we are not but I will try some of the smaller sites tomorrow. I think this is the one ? http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=5011 I haven`t tried yet but will do. We booked out main camping Holiday last year , we are staying at Mother Iveys Bay in Cornwall in late June, really looking forward to it. If nothing else all the hunting round for a site has furthered my knowledge of campsites in the Yorkshire Dales and Lakes areas (it was non existant before :) ), there are some great sites and I think I will be booking for next year pretty soon ! The reviews section of this site really does help and gives me peace of mind.
Yes, Nick, that is the site I meant. We have walked along the river there and it seems nice, although never stayed there.
Glad you have got somewhere to look forward to at the end of June, and yes, you are right, you now know a lot more about campsites in Yorkshire than you used to, so every cloud and all that!
Hope you get fixed up somewhere even at this late stage, good luck once again!

Sounds like we might be crammed in from the reviews but it`s a nice area and we are happy to have found somewhere.
Next year I am booking early !
Thanks again
Nick.
