Hello,

We are planning to go camping in Northumberland in mid July.  My wife wants to stay at Dunstan Hill near Alnwick because she thinks there is less likely to be a problem with midges in that area.  My wife gets eaten alive by anything that bites and she is very keen to avoid midges if at all possible!

However, I'm very keen to try the Bellingham, Brown Rigg site near Bellingham but my wife is less keen as she thinks there will be a strong chance of midges there in July.

Has anyone been to either of these sites in July and can comment on how much of a problem midges might be at that time of year at either site?

If midges are a problem at both, does anyone want to suggest any alternatives?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Marcus

Can't give advice on what the sites are like but she couldn't take some avon skin so soft it helps keep the midges away from me.

You'd be very unlucky to get midges at Brown Rigg or Dunstan Hill.  There are however, millions of the blighters nearby to Brown Rigg in Kielder, so if you visit make sure you use a spray.

Hi there
I just returned yesterday from greenhaugh 4 miles from Bellingham and I got eaten alive as did my dog
I didn't know about the midges in Northumberland or I would have taken some spray
They don't normally bother me too much but the people that lived in the village said they are like this until Oct.
Had to stop walking in the woods couldn't sit in the garden constantly slapping your head and face.
Such a beautiful little place I visited just wish I'd known about them
Honestly inland right now is rife
Don't normally post thigs but thought better had.
Or just do what the locals do and invest in a very good repellent.
Hope this helps you

Dunstan hill is on the east coast so there will not be any midges.
Midges breed in sheltered areas with trees and water.

The OP hasn’t posted since 2011, but I’m sure someone will find your comments helpful.
Odd to read about east coast midges, because we’d normally expect to be plagued by them here on the W coast, but this year we can sit outside unbothered. Strange.

Trek 50, you won’t have a midge anywhere near you. If you don’t want Midge, Mosquitoes, Ticks or Horseflies, then you just HAVE to use a repellent, it is, literally, as simple as that.

Get some candles going, use a coil under the table and get some stuff on. Avon Skin So Soft is good stuff, but you really need something with DEET. 👍

I'm usually quite fortunate at not being bitten by bugs, but play safe and apply bug repellent anyway if there's a risk, BUT some years there seem to be some Demonic little blighters that 'get' everybody, regardless of natural or artificial repellents! I've been at rallies with friends, and regardless of all attempts to defend ourselves, we've ALL been got, to such an extent, open air activities have been abandoned!

Whilst DEET based products are rated as one of the most effective, caution needs to be taken because it is very damaging to many plastics! I've got some expensive photo gear and other things like hikers GPS units that I don't want to put at risk, so I avoid DEET products! … but it's all the relatively cheaper gear as well, like clothing, chairs, torches etc. etc. AND TENTS, that are also at risk. I use Jungle Formula Outdoor & Camping (DEET free), which for most part seems to work.

DEET was first developed in the mid 1940's long before most modern plastics were invented, so no thought was given to it's impact on them! The higher strength DEET products are intended for tropical climates where the bugs transmit life threatening diseases, they are generally a bit OTT for the UK where bugs largely have no more than an irritant risk, although Lymes disease from Ticks is a small risk.
