we are travelling to Oban, and have been told that the A1(M) is the better route. Has anyone any comments please. We shall need to overnight somewhere en route

It very much depends upon where in the SE. Going North and using the A1 involves you in an assortment of roadsNorth of London from Motorway, dual carriageways and single carriageways. Using the M1, m6. m75 will take you all the way past Glasgow and then you have about 80 miles of generally good quality single carriageways to Oban. Dover to Oban using the M6etc is 581miles, using the A1 is 590miles.
put it into google maps it will give you an idea of journey time and you can move the route around,i use it a lot but take rush hour and stops into account
I would start on the M1 and then the M1/A1 link, but it would depend on the roadworks as to whether the M1 or M6 is better. If you are a C&CC member, there is a certificated site called Springvale Farm near Rotherham very near the M18, no facilities but only £6, ok for overnight.
M6 can be a nightmare at times, we live just off the M6 junc 14 or 15 for us, so use the toll road if going south it can be very busy from junc 4 up junc 20/21. If we go north we go late night or early AM.
We travelled to Oban from Durham last year using the A1 past Newcastle then A69 to Carlisle then A74 to Glasgow. Unfortunately we arrived in Glasgow about 4pm and hit rush hour traffic. The A1 past Gateshead Metrocentre is also slow at rush hour.
We always prefer A1/A1M to the M1 if heading to the South East.

It really is swings and roundabouts, but if you use the M6 then you are coming up the west side and that means travelling up the west side of Loch Lomond and this can be a bad bit of road for caravans. I know as I stay close to it.
If I were you I would use the A1/M1 to Newcastle then the A68 to Edinburgh, the M8/M9/A9 to Crieff then the A85 to Oban. From Newcastle these are nice roads with beautiful scenery. This part is 243 miles.

The road up the side of Loch Lomond is perfectly adequate for caravans, there is a length of 8 miles from Tarbet that is a bit windy that takes a little care in places because of traffic coming the other way but there is always room for two vehicles to pass easily. It is my favoured way North from South of Glasgow, I find the alternative via Callender to be longer in distance and a lot longer in time taken.
I travel to the west coast of Scotland several times per year from West Yorkshire.the best route for distance, time traffic etc is A1 north then cut across the A66 to Penrith where you join the M6.This depends on your departure point.
Our preferred route (not towing though) from North Yorkshire is over the A66 then up towards Glasgow on the M6-A74-M74.
BUT - if you are going this week, the Appleby horse fair is on and there are lots of horse-drawn vehicles on and around A66, which can slow things down big style and they also have an unfortunate history of accidents. Personally, I would avoid A66 for a few days unless you are happy to dawdle along.
