Several friends with caravans and campers have recommended sites in the New Forest etc that don't have any toilet or shower facilities.  I just wondered if there are any rules about the sort of toilet you have to take with you.  We have a tent and have just bought a Kampa Khazi (posh bucket with lid) which we will use with disinfectant.  Would this be acceptable at this type of site or are you expected to have a proper chemical loo?  And if you had a tent, would you also be expected to have a toilet tent?  We use one of the small bedroom pods in ours for the toilet at night.  Obviously we would empty it frequently and keep it really clean!

We've not stayed at the ones with no toilet facitilies but people I know who have say that some people that stay there don't even bother to bring a loo and just go in the surrounding woods. I'm not advocating this at all but unless things have changed in the last year then your Kampa Khazi should be fine for a couple of days though you'd need to take it to another site to empty it.

Thanks for that!  Didn't realise that there wouldn't even be a disposal point for the loo.

If they are sites then they should have a disposal point. Minimum requirement for basic CS & CL sites is fresh water & Chemical Toilet disposal point.

There are some in the Forest of Dean as well and some don't even allow tent trailers so you really need to check with the camp itself as there may be a reason. I think it's because wild boar in the Forest of Dean, however they do have a site for those with tents, it's got wire fencing along the wood fencing there.

I would definately take a potty with you and not use the woods.

Wouldn't dream of going in the woods - that's not nice at all!  I like 'back to nature' camping but that's taking it too far!!

I can't see anyone inspecting your facilities !! all sites should have an official emptying point.

Check with the site anyway as some of the New Forest sites that are listed as having no toilet facilities actually do have temporary ones. We went to Stoney Cross last year which says it has no loos but when we were there they had one small mobile unit with 3 loos each side and cold water for the basins.

We use "own san essential" sites and managed to get a Thetford portaloo which was given to us by a kind UKCS'er who had traded up to a motorhome. We have a shower/toilet tent (for showering on very basic sites) but we usually keep the portaloo in the spare sleeping compartment - this is a bit of a work in progress as it's only our second year with the portaloo.

On sites with loo's we just use a BWL and WAG bags overnight and they work fine, but I'm not sure I'd want to share a BWL for a couple of days - even with my nearest and dearest!
