Not sure if this subject should be on this forum but nothing else seemed suitable so.....Can anyone recommend places to go around Gwithian/St Ives?  I've done the usual Google search & found some ideas but it's always worth getting personal opinions.  I'm looking for wet weather or dry weather activities that aren't too expensive - not theme parks though(sorry kids!).  We can travel but don't want to go too far.

Any ideas would be very welcome.

Cornish Goldsmiths is free to get in. No sure how far from St Ives but we have been from there. They have lots of kids stuff going on in the holidays. Gold panning for a fee. Its OK to pass an afternoon for free in the rain.

Bird sanctuary in Hayle

St Ives on the Park and Ride.

Trencrom hill if you like a treck and great views right accross Cornwall from St Ives to St Michaels mount.

Activity centre in Leedstown but cant remember the name.

Poldark in Helston may be a bit too far.

If you fancy some shopping can't beat Trago Mills (Falmouth,Liskeard,Newton Abbot, depending how far you want to drive). Falmouth branch is smallest (our favourite), Likeard has ponds with ducks, restaurants etc., Newton Abbot has kids rides ,farm animals etc,All sell just about everything you can think of from a whole new kitchen to a bucket & spade for the beach & usually really cheap.
We also love Paradise Park at Hayle (Bird park) although thought this year it seemed really expensive to get in(buy local paper either "The Cornishman" or WestBritton" as they often have vouchers for here & other attractions. For a nice walk & totally free try Tehidy Woods near Camborne (used to live behind here),lovely woodland & stream walks & a cafe for icecreams.

Almost forgot try a pint in "The Bucket Of Blood " in Phillack ,Hayle . It is an old pub with a very low ceiling, the first time I took my hubby home to meet my mum we went here for a drink & there were two old ladies at the bar taking bets as to whether he could get to the bar without hitting his head (He's 6' 5")

FREE - Coast to Coast cycle trail, between Portreath (3 miles up the coast from Gwithian) and Devoran on the south coast. Cycle hire available.  It's a bit more of a challenge than the camel trail and will give you a view of Cornwall's mining past...

FREE -Tehidy woods for a walk in the woods or a wander around the lake...and there is a cafe. It was once home to THE mining family in the area, the Bassets.

FREE - Trewavas cliff near Porthleven or Lizard point where you may spot the Cornish national bird...the Chough.  They are slowly re-establishing themselves along the coast and there are wardens with telescopes/binoculars to show you the birds...they are spectacular flyers, even if they do look like a crow with a red beak.

St Michaels Mount - free to NT members.

NOT FREE!! Truro is good for shopping...if you are desperate!!

Hope these help

Oh I forgot...visit Portreath..it's got a great beach with rock pools to fish/crab in, a swimming pool cut out of the rocks, by the harbour wall and at the other side of the beach you can see if you can find all of Lady Bassets Baths.

Lady Basset had arthritis and bathed in salt water beleaving that it releaved the symptoms, so she had baths cut into the rocks and cliffs so that she coud bathe at any state of the tide.  They really are about the same shape as a modern bath (minus the taps!!) and are scattered around the rocks....so it's best to visit at low tide to scramble around.  I forget how many there are, but she must have been a game old bird to clamber up the rocks and into the pools.

If you go to Truro - the Royal Cornwall Museum is free and if you have kids its fab. We always go there with the kids (especially on a wet day) because they have a kiddies themed interactive area and crafts and activities for the kids and its all free!!!

Hi,  I live 5 mins from Gwithian, great place to camp is church town, great positon but not much there, another with lots to do pool ect  great for kids is St Ives bay holiday park upton towans.  Stopped there many of times, indoor pool but can be busy.  Depends on what you want.

Lots to do in the area, paradise park hayle, flambards heltson, fab train ride into st ives from st erth, just of the A30 the other side of Hayle.  Bit of a drive but really nice is the minack theater.  Tehidy parks is super for a walk, plus all the beaches and with gwithian what more could you want?

if want somewhere to eat godrey cafe, great food mid price, sandsifter back of the beach good great seafood pizza, hells mouth cafe good breakfasts,   10 mins in land you have Trevasksi farm connor downs, good food market good food cakes to die for.
