Thinking of going camping to isle of wight 1st week august but the only sites i can find with electric hook up with avalability is thorness bay.this is a park resorts site and have heard some dodgy reports on internet about these parks.has anyone been to this site recently camping and can give a unbiased view on facilities eg toilets and washrooms etc.

God don't go near the place. OK I probably shouldn't say that but we got a free holiday out of them last year after complaining about the state of this place. If you go to a Park Resorts place here on the Island, try the one at Nodes Point near St Helens. Not only is it a reasonable site but it has access to one of the best beaches on the Island.

As for facilities at Thorness, the shower/toilet block is new but badly designed and you have to key in a code to get in the blooming thing along with the fact the showers were burning hot last year and didn't drain properly so you were stood in a pool of water and so were your clothes.

The water point had no drainage beneath it and was running off in the direction of an electric box. The beach is no great shakes either.

Is that enough to be going on with I could go on but mine is one of the reviews you may have read!

My review from March 2008 should be enough to help!

We had a holiday at Nodes Point during May half term.  Stayed in a little chalet but checked out the camping area as we go camping too.  Main toilet and shower facilities looked lovely, although there are also some 'portacabin' type facilities too.  The lower camping field has some electic hook ups round the edge and is right next to the beach with some fantastic views.  The site also has a good pool, shop and evening entertainment.

Sorry Ratty - the block may look new but it is badly maintained and poorly planned. See my previous comments together with my review. As a resident of the Isle of Wight, I was appalled with the set up and embarrassed that visitors would go here when there are far better facilities elsewhere on the Island.

Nodes Point is a far superior Park Resort facility and I shall be using it myself at least twice this summer.

Of course that was August 2007, so a lot may have changed since their refurbishment over the winter !!

This site is also in the middle of the island making it perfect for visiting attractions in all directions. Nodes point is on the far East of the island meaning a trip to the Needles, or anywhere on the West of the island is one long long trip.

Cheers  Ratty

I'll sneak in and see if the toilet block has improved. trouble is it was brand new so knowing Park Resorts slightly penny pinching methods I don't hold out much hope that they've investing in altering it. I will take a peek sometime and report back. It may entail some covert attempts at entry as the block relies on a coded keypad to get in. Not ideal if you want to let your kids go to the loo without you during the day.

Sorry to butt in here - but could anyone help with this one.  We've booked a touring pitch at Park Resorts, Lower Hyde but are now wondering if we're going to have enough room for our tent.  We've got a Vango Aspen 700 DLX which is very big and probably too large for the pitch size (found out too late that there might be problem after booking).  What I want to know is whether they are very picky about overlapping other pitches by a foot or so.  Also, I've read that the pitches are on a sloping hillside.  Does anyone know if that is correct?

Any feedback on touring camping on this site would be very welcome as all I can find is feedback on the static caravans.

Thanks alot
