I usually drag my tourer around with me but next weekend we're 'roughing it' in our tent but I was wondering if anyone can tell me the best place on Loch Lomond to camp out? I'd prefer to have the car nearby and be on the beach. It's been many years since I slept in the tent up the Loch and not sure if my old haunts are still there.

The area I have in mind is from Balmaha to Rowardennan.

Any feedback will be much appreciated.

That's probably you best bet if you're wild camping. Bit to close to Glasgow for my liking as it a ned magnet in camping terms.  Sure you find a nice quiet spot on the stretch though. Have a wee jaunt up the Ben.

Have a good one.

The C&CC have a site at Balmaha and also a former forestry site a bit further along which is Cashells I think, and nearer to Rowardennan. I haven't got my sites book at the moment. I certainly know the Balmaha one as we worked as assistants there in 1990. Its a wonderful area and we just loved it. Its on the road to Rowardennan about 1 mile out of Balmaha.

Just realised you want to rough it. Certainly wouldn't be roughing it at either site but there are lots of lovely spots there on the shores if you are allowed to pitch tents. Not sure on that.

I spent the weekend at Sallochy, about 1 mile further up than Cashel. Brill spot right on the waterside but as mentioned on this thread the bucky neds were out in force but they were quite friendly and respected the area and brought their own fire wood, so that's all you can ask for I suppose.

I'm definetly going to go back there again, maybe this time take the tourer.

there is a bothy roughly 4 miles from rowardennan along the rough track by loch lomond or there is a wild camp about half a mile past the youth hostel but you can only stay about 2 night max on this one. Its the site i will be using in july for my walk of the west highland way
