Hi, we are over in the UK to work for the summer, and thought we'd be able to stay in our caravan.  BUT we hadn't realised there is a maximum stay of 21 or 28 nights on caravan sites AND some sites refuse to take people who are working.  Why is this - there seems to be a bit of snobbery about it!  We are in the Surrey/Middlesex area - does anyone know a site that accepts people who are going to work during the day?

Who have you tried to call ? perhaps you may be better off with smaller sites .Have you had a look int the 'Camps site search ' Our next door neighbour works from home a lot and one of his mates has bought a caravan as he is fed up with staying in digs.

I'm sure there are sites that would accept you, it's just a matter of trawling through the lists on here and ringing them up, it might be better to go and see them in person.

As suggested above, you might have more chance with the smaller sites, perhaps you could find 2 or 3 sites that would be happy for you to stay for a month, then alternate between them.

at out previous storage site they also had a 5 van site next to the storage and they had 2 vans there that were for almost all of the year we had our van stored there, so maybe a small cs or cl site would be better

I don't understand what difference it makes to a site owner whether a person is leaving the site to go to work or leaving the site to go to a theme park. Do they consider someone working for a living is dragging the standards down or something. I don't think I'd tell them.

I think the limit on how many days you can remain on a site is something to do with planning permission. No doubt someone will correct this if I'm wrong.

2 things spring to mind

1 - what time will you be leaving for work? some have locked gates between certain hours ie 10pm till 8am

2 - There probably trying to keep the travellers out.

It could well be a planning restriction. A touring site license is just that a place for touring caravans to stop, not to provide a long term residence even if it is just for a couple of months. Would it be a really big hardship to change sites every three or four weeks?

David

The reason sites do not accept people who use them for work is planning permission. With out exception most council p[anning states caravans must be used for holiday use only . on top of this many have a 28 day planning use also.

what about people on seasonal pitches. i went to a site recently and quite a few of the caravan occupants got up and went to work most days. i over heard one man say he had been called out for work in the early hours. is it a case of one rule for one another for everyone else or does it depend on the site

Den

we stayed at a C & CC site recently and they had a couple of workers staying on site but it was low season

have you tried ringing the C & CC sites to see if it is an option?

We stayed in Dunvegan last Sept and had a couple of vans behind us that had workers in them never heard them get up in the mornings.

hope you get sorted

Jane

You need a site which accepts 28 dayers. You would still need to leave the site for a day or two. But you can leave the van on site.

Hi Den, I don't think you'll have alot of luck in that particular area. Both my son and son in law work all over the country on civil engineering projects and were earlier this year working in the Esher area. Found it impossible to site a van anywhere in the area and finished up in B & B. Moved from there to the Southampton area and had no problem at all getting sited. Best of luck..........Mick

Thanks everyone for your replies.  Although no-one seems to know of a site in this area, I'm a new member to this website and forums and really impressed with the number of responses!

(looks like we'd be better off in Southampton !)
