We watched a programme about wainwrights walks the other week and quite fancy walking up helm crag. Could anyone recommend a decent campsite in the area - preferably one with plenty of peace and quiet cos there is only myself and my wife so we prefer quiet sites. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

The route taken by Julia Bradbury up Helm Crag started from Grasmere but i don't think there are any campsites there (its a bit posh for all that!). The nearest one i can think of, that would be anywhere close to walking distance, would be Rydal Hall campsite which is listed on the campsite search facility and has a couple of reviews. I haven't stayed there myself but have passed it on several occassions and understand that it has different fields for different types of people so you might find some peace and quiet there (a rare thing at Lake District sites!)

If you have transport you could stay further afield and drive to Grasmere but be warned, there is very little parking there and during the summer it gets full very early and is pricey. Failing that, there are good bus services from Ambleside but once again, no campsites. Ambleside football club used to open their pitch and facilities for camping during the high season but you definitely wouldn't get any peace and quiet there!

hope you get there and get up Helm Crag. It is a lovely short and accessible walk with some amazing views from the top

Hi

There are not any campsites in Grasmere itself, however one of the clubs (think its the caravan club) take over one of the fields at Bank Holidays and some weekends in the High season.

There are some sites within short driving distance, why not use the new radus search on here then ask about specific sites.

Helm Crag is a lovely walk, don't forget to wave at us from the top I can see it from my office window!

Wish i could see Helm Crag (or any lakeland mountain top) from my office window rather than the office block next door!

Yes we are really lucky. It makes working 18hour shifts worth it!

These are all really good, small campsites altho none are very near I'm afraid but if you go during the week the roads won't be busy.
