Hi all,

Our holidays this year have been completely messed up by circumstances beyond my control so I now find myself with two teenage boys, a big tent and an overwhelming desire to get back down to the St Merryn, Trevone area of Cornwall.

We have been there several times before staying at some great campsites but this year we just want to take off and turn up. My question is does anybody know of, or can they recommend, a farmers field that allows campers. Or for that matter a site that has a no frills overspill field.

I won't bore you with the reasons why but it will need to be cheap, cheap, cheap.

I'm sure we normally drive past a field that advertises at £5 a night, anybody know of any others?

Am I mad loading the car, driving 350miles and taking a chance?

Cheers,

Longjon.

Hi Longjohn,

I would doubt if there's anywhere down there at this time of the year charging £5.00 per night, especially when they know that a lot of people are staying in the UK this year because of the high cost of going abroad ie surcharges etc.

We went all the way to Cornwall from Knebworth in June and weatherwise, it was a bloody disaster. Friends who live down there have told that since we returned the weather has not improved and that is now three weeks on.

Personally, with the "Summer" we are currently "enjoying" I wouldn't entertain spending all that money on fuel to be let down in such a way. Don't get me wrong, we love Cornwall but she can be a very fickle lady when it comes to the weather and it'll be a cold day in hell before we venture that way again.

My recommendation would be to stay closer to home. Try the New Forest or somewhere like that. Certainly not as expensive to get to and the Forestry Commission sites aren't bad value for money.

Vic

Thanks for the replies guys.

Vic, I understand where your coming from as we drove to Cornwall the day Boscastle disappeared. All the way down the weather looked good until we turned off the A30 and it was like someone turned the light off. We survived 3 nights of a 3 week stay! The reason we want to head to Cornwall again is for the surfing and with my boys growing older by the minute this might be the last time they want to be seen with the old man

At the moment we are still tempted to wait for a good forecast and just go. What I really look for in a holiday is an adventure so at present the risk looks worth it. Now if only I could remember where I saw that field.

Longjon.

Isn,t there a camping field adjacent to the carpark for Bedruthan Steps? Just a field I believe that doesn't take bookings as such.

Thanks Merlina40 the perfect location for what we are after.. Have noted the name and will check it out when, and if, we ever get to go.

Anybody else know of any gems like this, I think I'll feel safer with a list of 3 or 4 just in case.

Longjon.

Noongallas near Penzance doesn't take bookings and always seems to squeeze people in. £5 a night each, £2.50 for kids.

Basic, but very, very friendly.

We have friends that go to a temp holiday site run by the camping & caravan club. Its usually on for the last week in July until the 3rd week of August and you don't book..just turn up. The field is HUGE!!!

Its in Porthtowan, its just a field and stand pipe and hole for your waste.  Its a nice walk into porthtowan and a good beach and its central to most things. We've stayed there for a couple of nights 2 years ago...but prefere a bit of luxury with a ehu.

Last year I think they were charging £5.  But you do need to be members of the club.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

I have now generated a list of maybes and hopefully the weather gods will allow us to get on our way next Monday.

Hi Rach, will look into joining the club before I set off. Can you just imagine getting all that way, finding the perfect place and then being refused as you aren't a member - doesn't bear thinking about.

Keep em coming as I'm sure there must be other mad sods who are thinking of doing the same.

Longjon.

Well, as you may have guessed by the fact I'm typing this the holiday has been put off for another week. Mind you seeing the forecast for the South-West perhaps not a bad idea

Any other suggestions and I guess we could add fields with good drainage just in case.

Longjon.

I stayed here http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=1467 for 10 days last August. It was £11 pn for 1 adult and 2 kids in a large tent. Probably not the part of Cornwall you are after but thought I would mention it incase you get desperate!!

TBH - the site was a bit basic for my liking. The pitches were big and had some stunning views. The toilets were very old and basic in a barn type building. Hot water limited but I only ever had 1 luke warm shower in all the time I was there. At the time of our stay it was wet wet wet wet and very wet. The site drained well and I had no problems with water logging.  A very peaceful site. Cheap by alot of standards for Cornwall in August. Despite being very rural Asda was 5 minutes by car- so handy.
