We're thinking of heading down to Doone Valley or Cloud Farm for the last Bank Holiday weekend this month but I'm a bit apprehensive, being new to camping this year.
Will it be hideously busy? Will we get in? I've heard that camping in August, particularly bank holiday weekends can be very crowded.
Advice from any of you seasoned campers would be much appreciated.

You're right. We've probably left it too late, but can't make our minds up where to go. Are there any campsites in this area that you don't need to book for?
Scotts farm and Nunnington near the Witterings don't take bookings but I would still call in the morning of tavel to see if there is room. I would be very worried about traveling to far if I wasn't sure of a pitch, especially on the biggest camping weekend of the year.
Good luck though I'd like to be able just go without having to plan to much.

I really hate to be negative but have just left nunningtons and as I was leaving I asked if there was any particular time of the summer we would run a chance of not getting a pitch and they said august bank hol they turn countless people away - scotts was fully booked by lunchtime on thurs so the witterings may be no good - holmsley or hollands wood in the new forest are def worth a shot but I would book rather than just turn up.
Cloud Farm has told me they don't accept bookings, they've told me to just turn up and find somewhere to pitch. We were planning to drive down early on Thursday am, but should we make it Wednesday instead?

I'm going to Cloud Farm next Thursday morning. I know it;s not bank hols, but I'll post a message when I get back and let you know how busy it was. TBH I'd be trying book somehwere if I were you.
North Morte Farm has got horribly busy in the last few years. It's almost impossible to get into during the summer hols. Crack of dawn's not much good. Most people only pay a few days at a time & the owners often don't know how many are leaving on a given day.
However, it's *such* a wonderful site that it's probably worth a chance. I managed last time by turning up on a Sunday about 11:00 - quite a few folks were packing up & I got a good pitch.
Cloud Farm was busy, but I'd say you'd get a pitch. They don't have 'pitches' so if you can find a space they'll let you in! Take insect repellent, the site is next to the river and has a serious midge population! You have been warned. Right next door is Doone Valley Campsite, if no space at Cloud Farm you could try there. Watch out for the mud at Cloud Farm!

We had a weekend there 2 weeks ago and it was horrendously busy, tents too close, guy ropes crossing. If you don't mind being so close you're leaning on next door go. Be prepared though if it rains it's a quagmire.facilities can't cope when full and prices high. Sounds bad doesn't it? Much better during the week.On the upside, lovely setting, campfires, nice owners. Doone Valley is opposite so lovely setting too but can't give you the gen as havn't camped there.

Queues for everything to be honest. The facilities are clean, but just not enough to cope with the number of campers. we had to queue for washing up, toilets, showers etc. Showers are not very well designed either, with no actual doors just rubber 'shuttering' like you get in factories and a curtain behind. Won't be going again put it that way.
