I phoned...the site has spaces, from tomorrow for the rest of this week, but I was told I should have booked, and that they might be busy this weekend(?) We wanted to be flexible, and the risk is on us. It was obvious the owner was less than pleased. Kind of puts you off really. Could someone explain why? I mean if there are free pitches what diffs does it make??

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Yes we are the same, due to work/home commitments it is impossible for us to make holiday plans, we just go when we can and it's usually on a whim with less than 24 hours planning.
I agree, if the pitch is free and has not been booked in advance then what's the problem? - It's a case of if your face fits on these sites i think, they like to keep some pitches free 'just incase' one of their friends/regulars decides to show up on short notice!
