Have been searching the internet for campsites and am in two minds whether or not to join a "club" for discounts?

Is there that much of a discount?

The reason I ask this is because I  have seen "club"campsites with the same sort of ammenities as non-club sites with only a couple of pound difference a night! (and the club sites seem to be full when I want to go, compared with other sites ).

By the time I have added up for 2 kids,2adults & pitch price on club sites, there doesnt seem much difference(not at high/peak season anyhow).

So I ask,"Is it really worth it?"

Hi, we joined the CC so that we could camp at Clumber Park which is only 30 minutes from home, we can take dog/bikes and not spend any money once there as thats all we do. Since joining though we've stayed on a few sites and they're all lovely. The facilities are always spotless, thats guaranteed. I suppose its risk free, you know when you get there the site is going to be of a high standard every time and thats important to me. A big plus for me ( but not others ) is that you can book and cancel online, with no deposit. You do need to be organised if you want to stay on a popular site, it will need to be booked on the day they go live ( bank hols, new year ). I've always managed to get the sites I really want and I book when I get in from work and haven't had a problem with availability. Other members feel that paying a deposit would discourage people not cancelling and leaving empty pitches. I would always contact the site direct though if it shows full on the website as it often does for Clumber and we've managed to book in at short notice. The magazine is good and they have good offers on insurance and travelling abroad etc.

The main club sites are probably competitive in price with the majority od commercial sites. The big advantage of them is that you know what you are going to get, the standard of the sites, access, and the facilities is consistently high, you can rely on them. The real way of saving money is to use the Clubs CL network where most of the prices vary from about £4 a night to £9 a night. The facilities you get on these sites vary greatly, some are just bare fileds with a bin, a tap and a chemical emptying point which may be simply a hole in the ground. On the other hand you will also find in this price range sites which have very small spotless toilet and showers, EHU and some wonderful views in some very exotic areas. The one yuo can see in the picture belw is £7.50 a night including shower, toilets, and UHU

That site looks lovely - do you mind telling us where it is or do you want to keep it a secret!

Thanks

It's in Portpatrick on the Mull of galloway, I've never actually stopped there we tend to use the main club site just over the hill at new England Bay. Port Patrick is a lovely place in the sun but when the wind blows, which is frequently when we tend to be there that CL is just a little bit exposed.

There are lots and lots of wonderful CL's, we use one at Welford On Avon just outside Stratford that just has a hole in the ground bins and a water tap, but it is right by the river, sheltered, blissfully quiet and Richard ( the farmer ) is incredibly helpful. He has a battery charger in the barn, when your battery runs down just go in and plug the charger in, there is a farm shop where the fresh ( like picked today ) beans and potatoes are wonderful. The only trouble is that he likes to fill the 2 acre field so there are frequently more than the 5 five vans on the field. But it is very popular and needs booking bt for £4.50 a night it is great.

I could go on but then everyone would be booking my favourite places leaving me to find new ones.

We joined the Caravan club now 2 years, only managed to get on a site once.

I have found many sites private ones that are cheaper and especially if you have a family it soon adds up and of quality to there standards. When touring i dont expect to have to book my holidays  well in advance. The british weather does not allow for this.

If you are able to book well in advance and use often then you may get value for money.

In June I paid £14.10 for one night at Putts Corner and the same for one night at Cirencester Park both Caravan Club sites.

I had an electric hook up and hardstanding at each location. The sites were beautifully manicured and the facilities block at each were immaculate.

Contrary to popular belief, the inhabitants were friendly without being overpowering and both sites were lovely and quiet.

On a commercial site you would probably pay up to £5.00 a night more for that level of quality so, IMHO I think they're good value. One seven night stay will pay your membership for a year.

As they are dotted about all over the country, we find them useful for overnight stops on long haul trips.

Vic

We are going to Devon at the begining of September for 9 nights, to the California Cross site. We've stayed before and its a lovely site. The cost (there are only the two adults) is £92.70, which I think is exceptionally reasonable for the quality of the site.

California Cross is a C&CC site not CC and aa a non member you would pay an extra £6 per night non member pitch fee.Over 9 nights that an extra £54. I reckon its worth joining as the membership fee is a lot less than that. Must admit I am guessing at the £6 , someone can put me right as I don't have my 'Place in the Country' with me.
