We are heading up to Scotland for the first time this weekend to stay for a week and we have no idea where to start with regard to where to base ourselves or a good site to visit.

Basically, we are looking for a very peaceful and quiet site; which I presume is a tough call in August but if it can be done anywhere I would suspect it would be in Scotland somewhere. We don’t care about facilities as long as there is a loo and a hot shower and farm sites or working farms etc. are no problem at all. We would love to be on one of the islands but, again, I suspect that in August we will have to settle for the mainland as the ferries are going to be jammed.

We are avid hill walkers so somewhere where we can get out amongst the scenery would be good and we don’t have any real preference where we go in the highlands as long as we can find a quiet relaxing site.

Any suggestions or recommendations very gratefully received by these Scotland newbies!

Try Ardgarten just at the top end of loch lomond towards the west side, the site sits on the banks of loch long, and the main village close by is arrochar.

we have just had 3 great nights there, kids were on the site but as it is quite big they were not a problem,

It's a big place!

I would suggest, in no particular order:

1. Oban Divers. Oban is a lovely town, close enough to venture up to Fort William. Has a ferry terminal where you can go to some of the Islands for a day trip. The site is lovely

2. Blair Castle. Blair Atholl is a small village near Pitlochry, which is more of less dead centre. Has a lovely castle and some good walks around Faskally. There is a train station with a decent service to Perth\Inverness. The journey to Inverness is worth it for the view alone.

3. Moffat C&CC. Moffat ia little town not far from Gretna. The site is within walking distance of town and you are close to walking areas such as Grey Mares Tail and St Marys Loch.

4. Port Ban. Near KIlberry, very remote so go well stocked up. The most beautiful view in the world, overlooking the Isle of Jura.

Wherever you go, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. It's a lovely country to visit.

If you want to go to the islands, try Fidden campsite on the Isle of Mull. It's a working farm right on the beach.  No EHU, but basic toilets and showers are available and the views are brilliant.  (See reviews)  We were there earlier this year.  There are no set pitches - just go where you want to.

Theres a few good sites at the north end of Skye, not to far from the hills and all will be midge free. Try the Kinloch site.

I would certainly recommend Blair Atholl Caravan Park, loads of space for tents and with electric hook up's, very quiet peaceful at night and fantastic scenery, ideal for doing a bit of hillwalking and sightseeing.

This is my fav site, basic but views to die for, best chippy in the whole world and great wee pubs too what more could you ask for. We are heading up for a week at the end of the month.

many thanks to everyone for your replies and suggestions. We are going to print off all the details and make the final decison 'on route' but it is great to have a starting point. Just keeping the old fingers crossed for a break in the weather this time after a wet week in the lakes last week!
