Whichever way you go there's going to be masses of traffic so be prepared to sit in traffic jams!!
Last week we left A1 at J47 and skirted York and carried on that way. There was a fair ammount of traffic then.
On the way back we did your other route (backwards of course and on the 'high road') and there was quite a bit of standing traffic at Pickering and Helmsley.
I'd stick to the more major roads to avoid all the 'tourists'
