Went camping for the first time in 2 years.  Picked what looked like a reasonable site, that had posted quiet hours of 10-8.

I'm happy that there should be a range of sites , some with quiet hours, some that have none, each to their own and all that.

There was the most almighty nose that went on to past midnight.  Kids screaming in the park to gone 12, a father in a near by tent roaring at his kids, shouting yelling and general bedlam.

Question is, why post the hours if they are ignored an no-one does anything?

Hi Helen,

I don't know which park you were on.....but here at The Plassey Leisure Park we do our best to keep to the 11.00pm No Late Night Noise policy. This is done by patrols around the park, and if we have a severe problem with a family / couple that openly ignore the rules.....off they are sent down the road the next day.

This only happens very rarely, but infact I sent one customer packing today!!

All the best,

I realise that my first post makes me look like a right old sour puss, and I'm not, but I do need my kip

And I'm not anti kid, because I've got two of my own.  I just didn't undertand why they would post quiet time hours and then just let all hell break loose.  Seemed sort of pointless.

I stayed on a site this weekend and they too have a quiet time mentioned on the little leaflet they give you on arrival. It is supposed to be from 11.00 pm to 8.00 am.   But by 12.45 am I was having to ask one group to pipe down because I wanted some sleep and the kids were up and about running around by 7.00 am.   Nothing said to them either.

I don't know about others but 1.00 am to 7.00 am is not enough sleep for me.

I don't really get it though. I think like this. "I am camping in a tent made of material therefore I am bound to wake much earlier. I am outside and once it is dark you can't really do much so might as well go to sleep early and get up earlier".

No, what people do is light fantastically bright lights and sit up chatting half the night and then sleep in half the day. Might as well as stayed at home to me.

But then that is just me. I do need my sleep though and it is no holiday if you spend your whole time feeling the need for sleep.

You are most definitely NOT an old sour puss and I couldn't agree more with your sentiments.

As a parent, we had no end of trouble when our boy was young getting him to stick to the rules when all the kids around him were flagrantly breaking them.

I speak principally of boards posted around swimming pools stating in big red letters, no airbeds, no diving and no bombing. I bitched at the managements to enforce the rules and their response was that it was up to the parents to keep their kids in check. I agree but clearly no one else did and certainly none of the parents were in attendance to enforce the rules. So in the end we didn't bother either. By the way the kids were having a great time.........

Definitely agree with the original post on all counts.

I love my camping but i am getting increasingly frustrated and despairing with regard to people's general behaviour towards one another on campsites. We have just returned from Scotland and were on a site there which, for the first two nights was dead quiet by 11pm. Then on the third night a family arrived in a motorhome, attached a huge tent to the side of it and, after being joined by another family who were already on the site, proceeded to talk, at a very loud volume, until gone 1am in the morning despite repeated requests to be quiet from other campers. There was not even the slightest attempt to moderate their speaking volume in regard to where they were and they were the only noisy thing on the site, but disturbed everyone else. needless to say, the family's concerned enjoyed a very late lie-in the following day. In my experience, complaining to the wardens or site owners makes little difference as they are seldom on the spot when the problems occur.

I have just posted a review for a campsite that has a notoriously strict 10.30pm noise curfew which we found was not enforced and if that site doesn't do it then, in my opinion, no site will. This conclusion is very sad but is, sadder still, only indicitive of the wider problems of anti-social and inconsiderate behaviour on campsites these days.

I use earplugs too and they are great.
But I can't get my daughter to use them and she gets disturbed by the noise. Think I may have to convince her to use them next year. Is 11 too young??

Thankfully we've never had too many problems but then we tend not to use the big family orientated sites with 'entertainment'.  On the few occasions when there's been any noise a polite word has been enough to restore tranquility.

The truth of the matter is that if 'management' can't or won't manage their site someone else will.  That someone being the most disruptive and obnoxious element present.  In that case I would argue that since the 'management' failed to carry out their role they should refund people's fees.

With regard to refunds, when we had the problem with the lake district site i have recently reviewed, we complained the next day and although the site were gushingly apologetic and assured us that the disruptive element would be removed (too late for us, we had already packed and decided to move on as a reult of the noise) they did not at any point offer us a refund, which would have been a much appreciated gesture. I did not ask for a refund as i did not want the whole matter to be reduced to money, as it was about much more than that, but i don't think it would have done the site any harm to have offered it. This is the same site that crams tents into limited space, so perhaps the money is ultimately more important to them than anything else.

i would agree with Carr, the best policy is to try and avoid big commercial sites, but as we have also had problems on basic sites (who are less fussy about who they take and don't tend to object to big groups etc.) it looks as though trying to go during off-peak times or wild camping are the only answers.

i wonder if the increase in anti-social problems is partly due to the so-called 'credit crunch' and people who are not really into camping or who don't understand camping etiquette buying cheap tent deals and trying to have cheap holidays as they can't afford the usual package holiday in the sun. If so, i guess we have many more years to come!

What amused me was that a woman on the next pitch to me must have been told to be quiet by someone because she said, in a very loud voice, 'Apparently my voice carries!'

To which I replied, from my tent, 'Yes it bloody does!'

after that she shut up.

I don't think that some of these people realise just how much noise carries when you are in canvas rather than brick!

on the subject of refunds if disturbed. We witnessed a huge distrubance at one site, whole field was disrupted. But the owners only refunded two pitches either side of the offenders. I will concede that one of these pitches had to sit in their car, as the fight and I do mean fight was happening right by their sleeping pod, so they sat in their car to be safe!!!!

Security was brilliant tho. And this wasn't a huge all singing all dancing site either.
