I seem to remeber that there are legal minimum distances required to be left between caravans etc when on a site - can anyone confirm this, what the distance is and does it include your awning etc and finally is it applicable to tents?

Thanks in advance

Helen

The CC and C&CC have the 6 metre rule.  For vans there must be at least 6m between nearest points on vans, this does not include the awning.  Not sure about when it is a tent.

I think councils can lay down space requirements in site licences too.

Not sure about distances but as jenni say some coucils do lay down their own rules as when we went to a Site in Aberfoyle we had to put van in jokey wheel first so the warden and assitant came along unhooked it and pushed it in when i asked why this was he said their licence meant the had to keep doors on one side. I did ask why they didnt make it the other side so we could then reverse in i was told thats not what the licence says.

It's not law, but there can be council bylaws in place, and the two big camping clubs both have "best practice" rules. When these rules are applied, "unit" includes tents, yup. Distance varies as to the bylaws or rules.

There are some campsites however where there are neither rules, bylaws or guidelines in place, and you can end up with guylines overlapping, ugh. Fire traps!

That is really odd!  Most places would prefer hitch out.  What make of van did you have then?

6m aint that much really.

Your awning will be 2.4, and next doors car will take up 2.7m.  That leaves you with under a metre in front of the awning!

Most, but not all, local authorities specify the minimum space between units in their planning regulations.  This space generally varies between three and six metres and applies to any type of unit.  Guylines and cars are disregarded and can be within that space.

With the C & CC the 6m rule is from unit to unit and a unit includes awnings, pup tents and I believe gazeboo's but not guyropes. Cars can be parked in the 6m gap but there must be a least a 3m clear gap left.

It also includes windbreaks
