Whatever you do .................. avoid any destination that would mean you taking in the M25. Honestly it is a bloody misery, we always travel west and go overnight or very late/very early because there is always a hold up somewhere. Our record is nearly 6 hours from Galleywood to Swindon !!

Essex is well worth a miss anyway and I'm not sure that Kent has much to offer either. Parts of Suffolk and Norfolk are OK but avoid Yarmouth, Lowestoft as they are a bit grim. Cromer and the North Norfolk isn't too bad oh and Southwold is very nice..

Personally I wouldn't leave the south west but if you must do do then try Dorset (Wareham Forest Touring Park) or Scotland in general (Garavan at Oban) is absolutely beautiful, or Wales offers some stunning scenary.

A week in Norfolk and a week in the Lakes. I take it you've ruled out Ireland, loads of nice places over here  ?

Having said that, personally I wouldn't let a dog decide where the whole family goes on holiday - kind of the tail wagging the dog, so to speak .....

The West Midlands has loads to offer and is really central for lots of other places.

Beautiful countryside, Wyre forest, River Severn and valley, Steam railway, safari park, stately homes, walks, canals, good pubs, Stourport canal network, near to Long Mynd, Bridgenorth, Black Country Museum, little villages. Good campsites. No beaches though.

By the end of this thread I bet the whole of the country will have been covered.

What a great and beautiful country we live in.

From all the suggestions it seems the answer is: anywhere but Cornwall and where you haven't been before. As you travel North or East you'll be passing thousands who are heading South and West to Cornwall!!

It depends on how much travelling you're prepared to do. The M5/M6 junction gives me nightmares. We always plan to pass it before 0700 or after, about, 2100hrs. We went from Cheshire to Somerset in July and it took us 6 hrs to do not much more than 200miles :-( :-( but that time B'ham was OK but travelling past Bristol was horrendous. The return journey was nearly as bad.

Our plan now is to try to keep within 100-150 miles but I guess we're fortunate in that there's everywhere from the Lakes to Wales, N.Yorks to the peak district, etc.

Unfortunately, Cornwall is pretty remote so it's a fair old drive to anywhere.   But good luck with whatever you choose!

Thanks so much everyone for all your suggestions so far.

You've given us loads of geat ideas to look into and ponder over!

Will keep you posted as to where we shortlist and eventually decide to go!

Just started looking for sites in Cornwall that are open in half term, never camped in October before, but think we may give it a try this year!

Thanks again, and keep your suggestions coming!!

Disagree about South Wales, you have Pembrokeshire, the Gower, Brecon area(south Wales) with the mountains, caves and waterfalls, Cardiff where there is so much to see and do, Abergavenny in a lovely position with its surrounding mountains, Hay on Wye, the Black Mountains, Carmarthen Fans (more mountains), the Valleys (Rhondda etc) have plenty of interest in themselves.

No don't do it, don't go to Norfolk.

Sorry peeps who live there, even though we've been many times and are going there for New Year, there maybe lots of nice places but they are used to Cornwall and in my opinion  Norfolk could never compare.

ok - how about the Cairngorms - fantastic scenery!  We never go out of Britain and I think we have been everywhere listed except Norfolk (although I have been when I was younger) and I haven't been anywhere bad - but the scenery up in the Cairngorms is fab - but then so is Glencoe and Loch Lomond - or what about Northumberland as someone else said - Holy Island is lovely.  I don't think you'd be disappointed going to Snowdonia if you've never been before (but then I would recommend that!)  I could go on...  maybe you could think what you would really like to do or see and that might narrow the choice!

Hi there, depending on what you're looking for, Humble Bee Farm near Scarborough is an idylic farm in a valley with nothing but the basics, very clean and bloody good quality basics but the site is gorgous.  It has spaces for caravans, tents and they have these lovely wigwams which are wooden huts kitted out with a fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster and also has a gas BBQ outside!   You can collect fresh eggs from the hen houses and cook them for breakfast!  So twee but sums up the atmosphere of this lazy site.

The site is only 10 minutes away from Scarborough, even closer to Filey and has loads of other attractions within reach.  Dalby forest is gorgous - has 'Go Ape' where you go through a course made in the trees and fly down zip wires etc.  Flamingo land isn't too far away too.

It has a website, humblebeefarm.co.uk.  Check it out!

Carol.

Shropshire of course! Quiet, underpopulated, fantastic scenery, history, food, drink and people. Bridgnorth's Severn Valley Railway; the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, the 'Little Switzerland'of the Long Mynd; the food-lover's paradise which is Ludlow; historic Shrewsbury; quaint Much Wenlock (one of the UK's most desirable places to live); castles, river, pubs, villages - it's the UK's best-kept secret.
