This is the sort of thing that if it was put to a National Referendum, our out of touch and out of date government would get the shock of their tiny and narrow minded lives.

The world has moved on a bit since gunpowder was invented. Being cruel to animals for the entertainment of humans is no longer politically correct. Everyone but the politicians know that.

We also have a nervous dog and what with the fireworks and the pheasant shooting season (starts today) he won't be going out much at all over the next few months.  He has a den in the cupboard under the stairs which he retreats to.  Now we live in rural Shropshire the fireworks are not so bad as they were when we lived in West Yorkshire when we used to get them being let off at all hours for weeks on end.  I do find that ACP tranquillisers which you can get from the Vet do help our dog on the worst nights.  I honestly think that without them there have been times when he might have died of fright.

I use ACP's as well if things get too bad. I hate doing that because it's not healthy for the dog, but when you get a 10 stone dog going berserk around the house, there is no alternative.

Her den is next to the bath with the whirlpool on, the noise seems to calm her.

Aren't fireworks banned in Northern Ireland?

They were for years, then about 10 years ago they were deemed legal. But because there were at least 2 generations of people who had grown up without them (myself included), there was an obvious rush to use our new found fireworks freedom. Unfortunately quite a few abused it as well.

So for 5 years now we have a half way house - they're legal, but you have to apply for a licence to set them off. The licence costs £30. And it does work, the number of homes setting off fireworks in ordinary areas has reduced drastically.

I saw in the Caravan Club mag that they have clearly stated that fireworks are not allowed on Club sites unless there is an organised display which I would have thought was a pretty rare event!

Any fireworks set off within half a mile are enough for my dog.

We need to get as far away from any habitation for peace and quiet. I once saw a satellite photo of the lights at night over the whole of the UK. By far the darkest places were Northumberland and NW of Scotland. Sutherland is a long way from Sheffield, that's why Northumberland is my choice.

Yet Tykey, Some folks purposely head for those dark areas so that their fireworks look better against the darkened sky.

If I were you, I would be heading for an area that is heavily forested.

Even some of our morons would not be daft enough to set off fireworks in a forest.

Excellent compromise and something UK government should be encouraging.

On an other note - we were coming back from honeymoon, flying into Heathrow, on bonfire night quite a few years ago. We had been invited into the cockpit just before we were coming in to land. The sight of all the bonfires and fireworks was wonderfull from up high and so far away form all the bangs.

If you are ever in Kendal on 5th Nov there is an excellent organised diplay at the Castle. It's on every year and last about a half hour so everyone with pets and beasts knows it's on and is warned. Must say apart from this I am not much of a fan of fireworks - especially at midnight on new years eve/day every year directly across the road in the hotel garden and jsut down the road at the other village pub.

We have 3 dogs this year, one of which is blind and very sound sensitive, I am dreading it. We may consider the New Forest for that weekend, trouble is isn't the 5th bang (sorry!) in the middle of the week, so it may involve 2 weekends away?

Not such a bad thing, maybe!!!

Is the New Forest quiet - can't imagine they allow displays due to the ponies etc?

With some of the new fireworks, the sound can travel a couple of miles
