had our 2nd year at bunree, its an absolute gem of a site, not a real lot for your sons to do unfortunately but it is ok to take kayak on loch, there is an activity centre over the road, and also a good walk through forest to view waterfall. there are 2 pubs nearby, 1, by the ferry crossing at corran, the other is off the main road before you reach corran, ain't been to either so cannot comment on them. loch ness (urquhart castle)is around a 2 hours drive, altho apart from actually saying you have been, there is not a lot there, we had a much better day at fort augustus which lies at the head of the loch.you can ride the cable car up ben nevis, which gives you spectacular views from the restaurant/information centre. the town of oban is an hours drive away, nice town this lots of good local shops. you can take the ferry to mull, well worth it. also get the ferry from mallaig to isle of skye, definately recommend it, but drive back for some fantastic scenic routes. fort william is 20 mins up the road, handy for your shopping etc, ample parking and a nice place. the roads are ok for touring, just be a bit careful going through glen coe, the scenery may distract you. we met a couple from caerphilly who split their journey overnight, said it took them around 8 hours in total, but was glad they made it. just remember to have a big enough memory stick for your camera, you'll need it. enjoy

With the number of people on here from north of the wall I thought there might have been a bigger response to this
A quick glance at the map will show that you will be about 10 miles from Ben Nevis and about 40 miles from Loch Ness, but bear in mind that Loch Ness is about 25 miles long so it depends which part of the loch you want to see.
Which particular West Coast beaches do you want to visit?
I don't know of any karting centres in the Highlands, I personally go there for the scenery and walking. The nearest one I know of is at Perth.
Loch Linnhe is a sea loch, so whether it is safe for a kayak depends upon your level of competency.
There are numerous Highland Games gatherings throughout the summer. I would suggest looking at the visitscotland website for the dates and locations, together with details of other attractions in the area.

Never actually stayed at Bunree although we pass it every year on our way from Inverness to Oban. Just to add to the information already given, there is a diving centre at Oban, about 50 mins away, and Mallaig is about 90 mins, where there are some gorgeous beaches.
The roads north of Glasgow are fine and, as has already been said, the only place to take extra care is when going through Glencoe - it's very hilly but the scenery is to die for.
Care is also needed for the 8 miles North of Tarbet as you go along the side of Loch Lomond, muc more so that going over Glencoe. Despitew this it is my preferred route from Glasgow to Bunree. The drive across Ranoch Moor and then down Glencoe has to be one of my most favourite drives anywhere in the UK.
