Plans next year's summer hols.  Scotland is a long way for us but have sorted an itinery that I think is doable.

Date From   To   Miles Nights Tarrif pn Pitch Fee Fuel Cost Hol Cost

Leg 1 Tue 21/07 Home   Troutbeck Head 275 4 23.6 94.4

Leg 2 Sat 25/07 Troutbeck Head Bunree   222 7 23.6 165.2

Leg 3 Sat 01/08 Bunree   Balckpool South 291 2 23.6 47.2

Leg 4 Mon 03/08 Blackpool South Whitemead Forest 196 3 24 72
        Park
Leg 5 Thu 07/08 Whitemead Home   89 0 0 0

            1073 16   378.8 268.28 647.08

I need some help sorting out stuff for us to do as a family (2 boys 13 &16) while staying at Bunree.  A few question for my Scottish friends.

  • How far is Bunree from Lock Ness and ben Nevis?
  • Are the West Coast beaches within easy reach?
  • Do you know of any karting or quad centres nearby?
  • Is the Loch at Bunree safe for a kayak?
  • Any pubs within a short walk?
  • Are we likely to catch a Highland games event?
  • General advise about stuff to do and stuff not to miss would be appreciated.

You will find the trip from Bunree to Blackpool quite a long one, we like to break our journey home to Rochdale at Carlisle. You would need to set off promptly in the morning and expect to arrive in Blackpool in the late afternoon. Loch Ness and Ben Nevis are easy short trips from Bunree, canoeing on the loch from Bunree is easy there is a landing area on the beach in front of the site, There is a pub at the top of the road leading into the site, lots to do around the area. Bunree is a site to book quite early if you can, in the popular times ( JUne - September it fills every night )

Thoughts taken on board.

What are the roads like for towing once I get North of Glasgow?

had our 2nd year at bunree, its an absolute gem of a site, not a real lot for your sons to do unfortunately but it is ok to take kayak on loch, there is an activity centre over the road, and also a good walk through forest to view waterfall. there are 2 pubs nearby, 1, by the ferry crossing at corran, the other is off the main road before you reach corran, ain't been to either so cannot comment on them. loch ness (urquhart castle)is around a 2 hours drive, altho apart from actually saying you have been, there is not a lot there, we had a much better day at fort augustus which lies at the head of the loch.you can ride the cable car up ben nevis, which gives you spectacular views from the restaurant/information centre. the town of oban is an hours drive away, nice town this lots of good local shops. you can take the ferry to mull, well worth it. also get the ferry from mallaig to isle of skye, definately recommend it, but drive back for some fantastic scenic routes. fort william is 20 mins up the road, handy for your shopping etc, ample parking and a nice place. the roads are ok for touring, just be a bit careful going through glen coe, the scenery may distract you. we met a couple from caerphilly who split their journey overnight, said it took them around 8 hours in total, but was glad they made it. just remember to have a big enough memory stick for your camera, you'll need it.   enjoy

Sorry I can't help with any info, we've never really stayed in that area. I must admit I do like the look of the site, and it's probably one for a visit in the near future....I must check if it's open all year!

A quick glance at the map will show that you will be about 10 miles from Ben Nevis and about 40 miles from Loch Ness, but bear in mind that Loch Ness is about 25 miles long so it depends which part of the loch you want to see.

Which particular West Coast beaches do you want to visit?

I don't know of any karting centres in the Highlands, I personally go there for the scenery and walking.  The nearest one I know of is at Perth.

Loch Linnhe is a sea loch, so whether it is safe for a kayak depends upon your level of competency.

There are numerous Highland Games gatherings throughout the summer. I would suggest looking at the visitscotland website for the dates and locations, together with details of other attractions in the area.

Never actually stayed at Bunree although we pass it every year on our way from Inverness to Oban. Just to add to the information already given, there is a diving centre at Oban, about 50 mins away, and Mallaig is about 90 mins, where there are some gorgeous beaches.

The roads north of Glasgow are fine and, as has already been said, the only place to take extra care is when going through Glencoe - it's very hilly but the scenery is to die for.

Care is also needed for the 8 miles North of Tarbet as you go along the side of Loch Lomond, muc more so that going over Glencoe. Despitew this it is my preferred route from Glasgow to Bunree. The drive across Ranoch Moor and then down Glencoe has to be one of my most favourite drives anywhere in the UK.
