we are looking for a site in the new forest that is open in the winter months , last year we stayed at setthorns a lot but we are wondering if there is another site that can offer woodland setting without amenities that stays open all year. we do not like sites with the organised layout of hardstandings and club houses .

setthorns is a lovely site in woodlands and seperated into different areas some are in an area with ferns around , some with woods but all are really lovely . its peaceful and lots of birds ,saw a deer when we pulled in one night . there is a disused railway running through the site that you can walk along to go to the village and there is loads of walking in all directions from the site. there are no amenities on site so you need own facilities but we find that a bonus as it does not get mobbed out . the wardens are friendly and all in all its a great place .
Thanks for that. We prefer sites like this also as we tend to be self contained. We are probably going to go out for a drive today to have a look round if I find anywhere I will let you know. Although we are probably going to look west also.. there is a site on here that I fancy a look at called Loveders. Anyway I will let you know what we find.

Just been to the Forest today and looked round Setthorns and Holmsley. Holmsley is open until 2nd November so it looks like we will be going there for the last weekend of October. Holmsley is a very flat open space, mostly grass but with some hardstandings and it is a typical forest site in that you simply pick a pitch but it has EHU on some pitches.
Setthorns is nice but I have concerns what it is like there in bad weather but I am sure we will give it a go.
We also like Roundhills but that is closed now for the winter. I will keep looking and keep you informed.
