Hi there - I am a novice caravanner itching to take my new (to me) van out with the kids and would like to get away for a couple of nights locally to try it out.
I live near Sherborne in Dorset - can anyone recommend a nice site - easy access, level pitches etc which is open most of the year? It would be nice to find somewhere fairly close where we can take off for a weekend during the winter when the weather looks favourable - I don't want to have to wait 'till spring - you can only enjoy so many cups of tea sat in the van in the driveway!!

Like you we are total novices at caravaning.  We live in Weymouth and have used East Fleet Farm as our "getting the hang of things" site.  Ideal for us as it is only 10 minutes away.Fantastic site, good size pitches (mostly flat) and excellent facilities.  Very helpful staff as well.

Well worth the drive from Sheborne.

We live in Dorset near to Bournemouth and we go to Sandy Balls at Fordingbridge.

You can see the reviews about the camp in campsite search.

Can thoroughly recormmend it for first time out as it as all  electric and water on your pitch and the pitches are fairly big.  Open all year round.

Wareham Forest Tourist Park is open all year and a very nice site right on the edge of the forest with direct access.

Take the kids to the Tank Museum. Better than toys.

Bagwell Farm at Weymouth or Wareham Forest near Bere Regis.

We live in Yeovil and have used these in the past when we last had a van around 76 years ago and have friends who still use them.

We have a van again now and are going to Bashley Park in the New Forest between Xmas and new year, it is an excellent site, open all year with indoor pool, bar etc.

have a run up to hoburne bashley

great for the family, well laid out & easy to manouvre around (for a novice tower), good facilities (my missus is a fussy one for the toilets & showers)

was one of the first we visited & thoroughly enjoyed it

Sandy Balls and East Fleet are great sites (IMO).  However, East Fleet will now be closed and won't re-open until early March 09.
