Hi all,

My first post on this forum!  I have been using the main site for a few years, and have been to some really lovely campsites as a result.

My partner and I bought a vw campervan last summer, all our camping was previously in small 2/3 man tents so the van is a total luxury!  Haven't been camping in the colder months before, but really up for giving it a try, so was wondering if anyone on here had any suggestions for a good site to try.

Would love a smaller site, which allows campervans in the tenting fields (not so keen on more caravanning sort of sites/areas) also allows campfires, has electric hook ups available and within a 3ish hour drive from south london (in a van that goes 60mph max!!)

I know that such a place probably doesn't exist, fulfilling all of those requirements!  But priority would be 1) being in a normal tent field and 2) having electric hook up as we would need to use it for heating.

Many thanks for any suggestions you can make!

And happy new year to all!

Jo.

Hi jo

I know you will just love camping in your little campervan. We have a small Romahome and it is just so snug and warm even in the depths of Winter, not that we often use it in Winter.

There are loads of sites and it really depends on which area you want to go to. We often stay in a pub CL if we camp in the winter and last year we went to the New Forest. We arrived in darkness and drove down tiny lanes in thick fog, really creepy. We stayed at the Sir Walter Tyrell pub. Had a wonderful meal in front of an open fire and left in the fog in the morning. Could not tell you what it was like as we could not see anything! It was just a lovely adventurous feeling. Lots of sites like this close for Winter but I am sure someone will know of one to suit you.

Happy Camping.

We have just come back from a caravan club CL in the new forest, They supplied the wood for the fires in the chimneas and an large half barrel open fire thing, There are only 5 motorhomes/caravans allowed on at a time and we had the whole place to oursleves (2 vans) as no one else was there

Also they have a sauna and jacuzzi, great for relaxing those aching bones after a cold day walking, there was even a small toilet block

You do have to be a meber of the caravan club though but its worth joining they have some great sites and CL networks and I have seen quite a few VW owners on sites

Gazmister

I was getting quite excited about the link you posted and I was thinking to myself that you had discovered a little gem of a CL. That was until I saw the prices! OK, I accept they have more facilities than most CL's but was a bit shocked none the less! Added it to my favourites just in case.

David

£2.50 per extra adult - but no mention of a reduction of £2.50 if there's only one of you.

How about Orchard?

I know its quite expensive but we thought it was worth it!

I have been looking at a few of the C & CC club CL's reently, they seem quite dear aswell,

We  have used some CC club ones that are only about £7 inc electric. However looking yesterday at some of the C & CC ones they're more expensive than some sites!

Anyone else found this?

I couldn't believe the price either, 'til I realised I was looking at the B&B rates......

Ok, its more than a 'normal' CL, but reading the facilities I dont think thats who its aimed at. Reading the feedback/reviews, I think those that like it love it.

I can see smaller 'niche' sites appearing over the next couple of seasons, lots of folk have paid big money for vans (and even more for motorhomes) who want to feel like they are getting a more personalised service, ok, the majority wont pay it, but a minority will, and thats how niche businesses survive.

Jo,

Sorry to divert your original post. Hope you have a great time in your new van.

Regards

Pete.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies!  I really like the look and sound of both of those places!

The little paddock site is actually about 15 minutes from my mum so I would get to visit her too, kill two birds with one stone as it were...!  I thought the charges seemed quite reasonable, I am used to paying £5 per tent plus £7 per person at my favourite tent campsite, making it £19 a night for a couple!  Maybe I'm just used to being overcharged?!

The orchard looks really nice too, I think I've been on their website before when looking for a site, but ended up going for another for some reason I can't remember!

Think we will try them both, perhaps the little paddock one first so we can always run back to mum if it gets too cold/wet or need her husband to fix the van :o)

Thanks again for your advice, much appreciated!

Jo.
