I have finally managed to convince my mum and step-dad to join us camping for a weekend - quite frankly im shocked they agreed because they are not err ....natural campers.  When my sister and I were children mum borrowed Grandmas old 4 berth caravan and took us to Morecombe, where it rained non-stop. She refused to embrace the outdoor lifestyle,  for example she drove to the water tap every morning, stuck her arm out of the window and refilled the containers

Fast forward 26 years (eek cough!) and ive managed to convince her that camping with us and the grandchildren would be "fun" for them both.

But I want  to sweeten the deal by choosing a luxurious site with the very best views from the tent field, wonderful showers and loos, in an idylic location, close to spectacular walks .....and a stones throw from a steam train line .... I dont want much do I.

We dont need a games room , we dont need a restaurant on site, we dont need any of the all singing all dancing facilities (apart from beautiful loos)

Its a bit alien to us - we dont usually bother about the standard of a loo or shower when we choose a site, the more rustic the better for us usually - but im thinking of mum. They are in their very early 60's and enjoy trying new things but wouldnt like a site that was too busy or too nosiey, too muddy or too dirty...and above all else the loos must be nice and have sockets for her to plug in her hot brush

Oooo she would not be happy if she knew the portrait i was painting of her

So fellow UKcampers, any ideas?

Could you ask the queen if she would rent you a corner of Buck Palace gardens lol

I know several caravan sites that might do but they don't take tents, I'm sure someone will know somewhere to suit you.

Good luck.

Have they done the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway? If not perhaps you could build  your trip around that. Loads of campsites in the area.

If you don't mind a small amount of driving then I would reccomend Dornafield - thirty minutes drive approx to Paignton for the railway in one direction and Dartmoor for the spectacular walks in the other. Dornafield has the best shower block I have ever used, imo it definitely puts the Old Oaks in the shade and lots of people on here rank the Old Oaks as the gold standard for these things! No restaurant, no entertainers, no swimming pool.

PS And there's a mirrored sit down area in the shower block with sockets for people to sit and do their hair etc .

We are going to Townsend Touring Park, just outside Leominster at August B.H.  It has a butchery and bakery on site and folk say it is really wonderful.  Look at the reviews:  I have spoken to the site people - they are so friendly.  One elderly lady who I spoke to was brought up on the farm - they accept all units.

Kelling Heath in Norfolk has a steam train running through the bottom of tbe site, you cna even get the train to stop and pick you up but the acutal station is just a pleasant walk away. views are lovely from the many walks, new shower block is good.

Showers at Townsend are OK, but are not the smartest I have seen.

I would recommend Dornafield. Lovely site, lovely family that run it and very clean toilets. There is a pub within walking distance but that is it, just fields. No bar on the site.

Would you consider Carlyon Bay near St. Austell?
Dosen't have the required steam railway, but has the best toilet facilities we have ever seen. My Mother-in law sometimes comes with us and she has not stopped talking about it.
It is a lovely, well run site.
