We have ours in the front locker with the toilet chemicals, Mallet & a few other small items in it during transit. Once on site it ALLWAYS gets filled up and left by the hitch. New year I had to take the ice out every morning.

I hope that I never have to use it but I'd rather it was there that not.

Hi All, I’ve just come across this site as the 19th Century Western Town I camp at are implementing some new rules to make sure everyone is safe.

I camp with a 19th Century Military Tent, and I’m told I need a fire bucket, but after reading what several have put, I’m wanting to double check some things.

The first is, I want a Water fire bucket, however I heard some have sand. Am I correct in thinking sand is used for oil fires (as water would make it worse)? And if so as I only have oil lamps, would a powder fire extinguisher be better than a bucket of sand?

Is there also any law which states they need to be red with either black or white writing?

I would also welcome those experienced to recommend size of fire extinguisher etc so I can get the correct items first time without having to waste money, time or/and effort on things which will not be of any good.

I’d suggest you go to your nearest ARCO store as they deal with safety equipment for the construction industry & others who are managing risks eg catering. They would be able to advise on fire extinguishers . We got our fire blanket at Arco, in case of a gas cooking fire in the Motorhome. Check the HSE website too and look at doing a Risk Assessment for yourself.
I don’t think anyone uses sand these days (unless you’re being authentic) except for diesel spills. Any bucket will do for water, any writing on it is neither here nor there, as far as I’m aware (from volunteer-run catering events with requirements for insurance).

Last posted on this thread years ago, but still use the red bucket FIRE written it in permanent marker, Fire extinguisher in car, fire blanket next to stove.   Still here to tell the tale.

Extremely unlikely a bucket of water will put out a tent fire or even several buckets of water. Best and safest thing is to stand back and let it burn out as more than likely there will be gas cylinders inside the tent.

In the past 20 years we have never used or seen the need for a fire bucket although we have a caravan. However we do have a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket even if they will not be of much use in the event of an fire.
