It really depends what you want for your little ones. We have 3 children ranging in ages from 4-15 and we all loathe Haven-style sites which are all singing, all dancing. We do however like sites which have the option of perhaps a bar, restaurant, indoor pool etc.
Unfortunately, we have found such sites to be lacking in the UK, though there are some. Have a look at Whitemead Forest Park - a more upmarket site with plenty for the kids.
Our personal favorite is Dolbryn in Carmarthenshire (Wales) which is a fair drive for you! It's a small, family run site and the family who own it are lovely. THey have farm outbuildings which have been converted into lovely rustic little shower/toilet blocks and the tiny original farmhouse has been turned into a little bar with wood burning fire and kiddies corner with books/games etc. There is a pond with ducks, a couple of goats, chickens and a play area with ample for youngsters. The coast is a 20 min drive.
We also love Kingsbury Water Park in the West Midlands. Plenty of walks in the vast forestry surrounding the lake. Not far from Tamworth where we take the kids skiing/sledging and just 15 mins from Drayton Manor Park. A perfect 'all-weather' site.
The rest of our favorites are all in France!
