Just booked a weekend at Nantcol Waterfalls, Gwynedd, disappointed to see the last review was in 2007 - anyone been there since then?

Yes an help you out, we were going to stay there the last two weeks of march but decided not to as they had no loo blocks or showers, we did however go to the site to see it, i would not reccomend this site if you are towing a caravan! Extremly steep and narrow roads into it, the village is more than a walk away, with no lights and very steep mountain cliffs! The beach is also a long way, you would not be able to walk it if you have children or not the type to long hike! The site itself is in a very pretty setting, but as we saw it you would be at the mercy of all visitors to the falls, who have to go through the site to see them. They are in the middle of building the new loo and shower blocks but unless you want to be in the middle of a visitors carpark i would choose somewhere else and just visit the falls. We think this site would be great in the low season not the high, apart from the falls etc there is not alot to do and any children would be bored unless you are willing to travel.

Thanks for the feedback - well we're booked now, all we want is somewhere quiet (oops)  to walk or cycle, but if the roads are steep that may be hard work!  We are pretty new to camping, started last year with several weekends and then two weeks in France - we are hooked, the hardest thing- so far - is to find suitable sites.  We would have gone this weekend but need to attend family celebrations, fortunately we live in Cannock Chase, so lots of nice walks and cycle trails!

I have visited Nantcol Waterfalls but not camped there.  I can certainly agree with what lily67 said about the approach road.  If you're towing anything at all, then I'd advise you to choose your arrival and departure time very carefully.

The campsite looks idyllic but you need to be very self sufficient.  There are almost no facilities.  Each time I've been there, I've heard somebody running a generator.

It can be quite drizzly up there.  We go to Shell Island a lot and can see up to where Nantcol falls are.  Even when the weather is clear on the coast, that hill is often shrouded in mist.

One thing to mention is the insects.  Close to the campsite there are lots of mozzies due to the water and the trees.  Farther up the falls I got a nasty bite from something a bit like a horsefly but it had a green and orange colouring,  My leg swelled up and the area was hot and sore for a month.  So use repellant!

Sorry to pile on the negatives when you say you have booked.  I'm not saying to cancel - just go well prepared.  On the positive side, my friend from Penkridge went camping there for several years on the trot.  She said her kids were out from dawn till dusk messing about in the stream which opens out to a wide pool with an island just beside the campsite.  Every time I've been there the kids have had loads of fun on the rope swings, dam building, sailing boats, etc...  If you can get your hands on an inflatable dinghy they'll be sorted.

Thanks for the feedback, and the tips about repellant, I'll make sure we have plenty!  Our three grandchildren are coming too (and mum & Dad) so hopefully they will have fun in the water - is it deep?  Not that we will be staying qround the campsite much, hopefully we will have plenty of walking and cycling to keep us all occupied - we are looking forward to the camp fire though!

Our family, 6 adults 3 kids and 1 dog arrived at the campsite and what a wonderful place it was.  We all had such a great time, no need to go too far as the campsite had all we needed.  The people that run it are brilliant.  Very friendly and helpful.  Having a campfire was definately the best bit, all sitting around at night just enjoying the sound of the water and the crackling of the fire.  We would recommend it to everyone, great place for kids and pretty safe.
