Fat Bum, I am sorry you feel that way, but you have to live here to understand the problems. As I have said previously, we are quite happy to pay a "tourist tax" elsewhere. I really do think that you have to live in a "major tourist area" to understand the problems. When I am on holiday I am in no particular rush to get anywhere. When I have to get to work on time, I am. When a seriously ill person has to be rushed to hospital from Grasmere to Kendal or Lancaster the volume of traffic is certainly a major problem. If we could just get some of this traffic off the road, it would be a help. You really do have to know this area to understand.

I ply the roads from the M6 to Skelwith Bridge/Coniston and back many times and have rarely seen the congestion you are describing. I suspect the troubles you talk about are those caused by locals on their commute not tourists.
I took the A590 last week to get to the south end of Lake Windermere - a fantastic road which is dual carriageway most of the way - pity the A591 doesn't match that. BUT it's far better than the roads into Norfolk where you get stuck behind tractors and lorries most of the way.
Mike, Try visiting on a weekend. In a morning 10-12 heading into the Lakes is a nightmare. About 3-5pm going out! Congestion is definately not down to local commuters on those days/times. Often takes 1/12 hours for a 12 mile journey.Agree A590 is now mostly a very good road, wish A591 could be the same!
bob - when a seriously ill person has to be rushed along the M4 and almost any time of day on any day of the week the volume of traffic can be a serious problem - I think there are traffic issues in nearly every part of the country at certain times, some places more than others.
Although I may not live in a very touristy area the volume of tourists passing through destined for other areas is probably far greater than the lake district - and they don't even stop here to spend their money. You just have to put up with it I'm afraid and realise that the tourist trade brings a lot of money to your region.

Fat Bum, I suppose we shall just have to agree to disagree on this subject. I hope you do visit. This thread was not meant to make people feel unwelcome, merely to spark a debate on how things could be improved for all.
I live in Kendal. Does this mean I have to pay to visit mates a couple of miles away 'on the other side...?' I think it's ridiculous to have to pay. Yes, the roads are busy especailly in holiday time but I am happy to live here and bring up my family in this beautiful county. If it wasn't for the tourist trade our council tax would be even higher.
