Hi - I am looking for a site ( for either for a tent or a campervan) near the coast in Scotland (dh has a bad allergic reaction to midges!!!) that has nice walks starting either from the site or within walking distance from the site. Dh isnt a great walker but I am and I hate having to ask him to drive me to a walking area just so he can sit in the car while I am hoofing it!

Any area in Scotland as long as there are no midges!

Thanks

The best walking is where the midges are - the north west.  If you go early spring they shouldn't be too bad.  I spent a week once at the glencoe forestry site at whit.  Apparently it was the driest whit since records began and when I came home I looked as if I had been to the bahamas.  I don't remember too much of a problem with midges.

Thanks for your reply - we go to the inland sites in early April and after October (again, when the dreaded midges are in hiding) and have been to the Glencoe site (fond memories of a few years ago sitting with my feet in the loch watching the steam rising - and that was in May!!!!!).

I am looking for sites for summer visits. Although we prefer the north west and the highlands I am happy to try anywhere in Scotland.

Dh has such a bad reaction to midge bites (he comes up in huge blebs all over and itches like frantic despite taking all precautions and using anti-histimanes, garlic, nets, skin-so-soft etc) that he now refuses to go anywhere there might be the slightest hint of one!

Why not look at sites in and around the East Coast not as mountainous but lots of good walks and hardly a midge to be seen...

Try Brighouse Bay or Sandyhills Bay both owned by Gillespie leisure who have their own website. Stayed on both in August and had no midge problem. They are near Dumfries. Brighouse Bay has lovely coastal walk.

Hi,

North Ledaig near Oban has walks directly from the site. I remember reading this in their literature. Sorry to say that we haven't experienced them as our kids are a little too young yet.

The site is excellent and directly on the coast, with excellent facilities and views. It'sa caravan club site.

Cheers, Alex.
