has anybody been camping in dumfries and galloway area and can they recommend a good camp site with decent facilities but not a holiday park. Ideally a play area for kids.

Brighouse Bay would be my choice if I had children, big enough to keep them occupied but not big enough that it feels like a hi-de-hi holiday camp.  Beside a wee beach, coastal walks, small ponds to fish in, well equipped play park.  I would also look at Hoddom Castle in Ecclefeccan, and Castle Cary at Creetown.

Agree completely with feeblecat about Brighouse Bay and Hoddom Castle.

Have been to both and done reviews on Hoddom and must get around to doing one for Brighouse - look on my profile under site reviews.
if you look on my virtual brochure they are both listed in it

I would say Brighouse bay also havent stayed at hoddom but been down a few times and looks ok you also have powfoot nice small campsite on beach and about 1/2 mile from hotel. Also nice small campsite at shawhead just outside dumfries (Barnsoul) lovely views with deer and red squirrel seen reguarly on site.

I stay in Dumfries so if you have any questions please feel free to ask if you have a certain area as Dumfries and Galloway is quite a big area and has loads of campsites from big holiday park to small family run ones.

Another vote for Brighouse. If you want somewhere quieter, the same company owns Sandyhills Bay - what a beach! Your kids will love it!

We tried booking in to Brighouse for a week in July but the could not give us a pitch with EHU for our Montana 6. Can anyone suggest another site which would be good for kids and would take our tent. I think Castle Point looks nice but not sure what it would be like for the kids.

Thanks

We love D & G because, as Gerry says, it is a big place.  We used to think Perthshire was perfect but D & G has every it has plus fabulous a coast line, too.

Our favourite used to be Castlebay but, from what I can gather, the change of ownership didn't go so well and it may now be closed - if anyone knows any different, I'd be delighted to hear.  We're going to Port O' Spittal just outside Portpatrick in June so will check it out then.

We spent last year on a seasonal pitch at Glentrool Holiday Park, Bargrennan which is about 12 miles from Newton Stewart.  Loads of wonderful walks in the Galloway Forest, not far from Wigtown, Scotland's Book Town, and lots of other places to visit.  We don't have kids (I think I'm actually allergic to them [8D][8D] !!) but Glentrool does have a small play area.

Our most recent D & G outing is Barnsoul.  They have grass pitches with EHU's so should be able to accommodate a tent.  Can't say I noticed a play area but there are plenty of woods to explore and lots of wildlife to look out for.  Unless it's very busy, it looks like there would always be a decent open space for play.

Good luck and enjoy your trip wherever you end up.

Hoddam Castle is a good site - nice camping pitches and a children's play area and lots of woods and outdoor space for children.

Hi Feecamp.  Castlebay is still open, have been since new ownership and booked in for this bank holiday weekend.  Only difference is that they also bought Galloway Point next door, maybe Galloway Point has dropped it's name and that's what youre hearing.  Castlebay still remains one of my favourites!

I went to Seaward last summer - very impressed.  It has a playpark, outdoor pool hot showers and is 50 yrds or so from the beach. I think it's the same group that own Brighouse Bay, but it's less "holiday park" than I imagine Brighouse Bay to be.  I definitely recommend it.  We actually intend to go down for a few weekends this year as it's only a hour and a half or so from Glasgow.

Park of Brandedleys is a nice little site with a little pool and clubhouse and very friendly staff. Brighouse Bay can get a bit busy but still a good site

I can recommend Auchenlarie, got a lovely little secluded cove at it, nice pitches as well and lovely toilets, they have a pool and a clubhouse if you want to use it but the camping field is far enough away not to be bothered by it.  Also Southerness, although strictly a holiday park again nice site for the kids with a pool etc and again right on the coast for a nice walk on the beach and there is plenty of room on the pitches!
