As far as I know there's nothing in Morecambe next to the beach. The only one I can think of which may be suitable is Red Bank Farm at Bolton-le-Sands, just a short drive north of Morecambe. Ideal for kids and one of the camping fields is almost on the beach.

We only go there now to visit my son.  There is a campsite right on the beach just outside morecambe in middleton, can,nt remember the name, but it should show up on the map, its through heysham, which is a nicer part of morecambe, stay away from the west end, full of druggies, and I mean FULL, and part of it is like Beruit. The nearest site is Ocean edge at heysham, But I'd read the reviews very carefully before you book, (and then dont bother) its not on the ocean edge its on a mud bath edge on the other side of a builders dump, not a beach at all, morecombe does have a beach of sorts but there is nothing else there, mostly run down seafront with many shops boarded up. A day trip and you'll have seen everything there is to see unfortunately.

It used to be pleasant enough about 25 years ago.  Wouldn't choose to go there now ...,,I recommend Silverdale area or the Lune Valley.

It is sad to see what has become of the place. As a nipper I was dragged along to both Morecambe and Blackpool (among other places). Morecambe used to have Miss GB, a fun fair, at least one pier, illuminations, Happy Mount Park of course, a dolphinarium and the Midland Hotel (now restored). I remember having fun in both places - something I can't imagine now. It also hosted Mr Blobby land for a short time. The '90's were a dark time for the place, however it is slowly being regenerated. For now though, I'd give it a big "don't go there!"

We had a ride out there for the day a few weeks ago as we hadn't been for years. I was appalled at what a mess it is now. There is nothing there (apart from a great Frankie & Benny's) and I would definitely give it a wide berth!!

I would try Silverdale.... Gibraltar Farm is a lovely site. ... and you could still have a day out at morecambe if you wish.   Last time I went to Morecambe was some years back and it was horrible......

Agree don't go to Morecambe. We live 15 min drive away and it's not nice. Search for Gibralter Farm Silverdale on here. Someone posted some pics on here recently. Then if you really want to go to Morecambe you can just go for the day. I wouldn't take my kids on the beach IMO it's too close to the nuclear power station and don't feel safe. There are often dodgy looking characters about. It's a shame because there has been a lot of investment in the area recently (new playgrounds, shops etc) but the drug problem kind of spoils it.

It was a nice enough place for a long weekend about 20 odd years ago - we used to stop there on the way back to the Stranraer ferry. But by all accounts it's a bit of a dump now. Lancaster wasn't much to look at even back then, I doubt if it's improved any.

On the plus side, the farm site mentioned above at Bolton-le-sands is OK though, and there's a terrific 2nd hand bookshop in nearby Carnforth - 2 or 3 floors (well, assuming it's still there of course) and you're quite near the Southern Lakes.

hmmmm think you are all a bit cruel rubbishing Morecambe like that, the central area where the new imported beach is isn't that bad.

Ok the west end is very iffy and I wouldn't venture that way but if you go away from that end it is turning into a nicer place.

There aren't any campsites as such close to the beach and I agree Red bank farm is on the beach just outside m'cambe, otherwise the lakes are lovely and a day trip in is nice.

There is a fab 2nd hand book store run by Tony on the corner by the pier pub you will get almost any book and if you can't see it ask him as he will know where abouts a particular book might be, you can also scruff his little puppy who is usually in the shop with him.

OK m'cambe isn't the most spectacular place but in the last 10 years the transformation is really vast and it will get better.  Easter weekend the beach was packed!

the central area is better, now that the midland hotel has been refurbished, can remember having late night drinks there back in the 90s, even took the dogs in. I remember the book shop, must have been open many years now, and the view across to the lakes is beautiful, just a shame they let the place get so run down. Have they cleaned the shelters up from where the alkys used to drink, and then get rid of it ?
