it will be the YMCA site, normal sites are not allowed to have tents visible from the lake (incase the gentry can see them from the mansions!) the nearest site to the lake that I have visited would be Park Cliffe, some friends stay there regulary, very good site, bar, private washrooms etc, stream for kids to play in.
As a child we used to camp at Coniston lake, at the Old Hall site right on the lake shore, the site is still there (and one next door) direct acces to the lake but you can no longer camp on the lake shore (they have shifted the pitched back 100 yds or so.
I used to love it, our boat was on the shore, I used to jump in and nip down to the farm shop for milk every morning.
Coniston is not as touristy as Windermere and not as busy, you can hire canoes, boats etc, the village is nice and a walk up the old man is a challenge, there's many places in the lakes to go that are really beautiful and quiet as long as you stay away from the main attractions during school holidays.
