Hi all,

Had a nice few days in the lakes earlier this year and whilst we were there we had a boat trip on lake Winderemere. Of course being the happy campers we are always on the look out for nice sites. We set out from Bowness on Windermere headed for the lakes aquarium and about half way there on the right hand side of the lake we spied a few wee tents. Mmmm! I thought that would be a nice little place to camp I'll look it up on the internet when I get home, can I find it? Of course not! So here I am once more drawing on the fountain of knowledge of UKCS. Does anyone know of this site? Does anyone have any suggestions? Any info would be greatly received.

Denise.

Might well have been the YMCA.  That's in about the right place.

There was also a scout camp site next door to the YMCA site at Stott Park near Lakeside, but I don't know if it is still there.

Hi Denise, we were in the Lakes last weekend as well and took the ferry from Bowness to Lakeside. The guy doing the commentary said that the tents we saw on the right hand side of the lake were part of the YMCA site.

Hope that helps!

Which side of the Lake was it on? the YMCA side or the opposite shore?

I think it could be the one at the bottom of the road from where you go up to Park Cliffe but name escapes me at the moment - ~Oak?? something or other??

Re read your post properly and it's not as you said right hand side but which way were you facing?

Hill Of Oaks is the one I was thinking of

realised that after I had posted (sorry)

I live in the Eden valley so Windermere are not my forte really.

Tend to avoid 'Lakes' as much as possible as it's full of tourists and you can never get to where you want o go without adding at least and hour onto journey times

it will be the YMCA site, normal sites are not allowed to have tents visible from the lake (incase the gentry can see them from the mansions!) the nearest site to the lake that I have visited would be Park Cliffe, some friends stay there regulary, very good site, bar, private washrooms etc, stream for kids to play in.

As a child we used to camp at Coniston lake, at the Old Hall site right on the lake shore, the site is still there (and one next door) direct acces to the lake but you can no longer camp on the lake shore (they have shifted the pitched back 100 yds or so.

I used to love it, our boat was on the shore, I used to jump in and nip down to the farm shop for milk every morning.

Coniston is not as touristy as Windermere and not as busy, you can hire canoes, boats etc, the village is nice and a walk up the old man is a challenge, there's many places in the lakes to go that are really beautiful and quiet as long as you stay away from the main attractions during school holidays.

Can also recommend both the sites mentioned above (well all 3 actually)

We went to Park Cliffe for a 2 week stay as OH was doing relief work over there. We ended up staying all summer and then leaving the van for the rest of the season and going every weekend.

Coniston - quieter than Windermere area but only just.
The Old hall site is really good and the CC site is Park Coppice and is a well set out site with direct access to the lake too. Lots of great walks in the area and the walk into Coniston itself from these sites is only about 15mis at most.

Hill of oaks is nice, but I think its caravans only, i visited a friend on there one year, don't remember seeing any tents, however it is definately on the lake shore, I know as we had a boat at the time and moored up there!
