Can anybody recomend sites near London with easy walking between them as my girlfriend has never camped and I'm a bit rusty. A few creature comforts would be handy and somewhere to eat would be good, so we don't have to carry too much food.

Which part of London are you near. There is a site just up the road from me called Debden House. It has 7 camping fields and also has a small cafe on site. If you look at the camp site search on here you'll find it there.

By the way I am Essex/east London borders.

I am in north London. After i have done a couple of test runs local i.e. Herts/Essex, I will be looking to go further afield. My girlfriend is really up for it at the moment but I need to test the water as she has never spent a single night under canvas. Hence me wanting to start her off easily.Debden House sounds interesting, I'll check it out.

Dont know exactly where you are but Debden House is in Loughton, so shouldnt be too far from you, it's only about a mile from me and I know the site well. I actually inspect the children's play equipment that is on the site. It's actually owned by the London Borough of Newham.

Search for Lee valley campsites, we stayed last year, no cafe though. Nice bit of countryside within the M25, a bus stops outside the site for direct access to the tube network.

I have also read about a site that allows open fires etc at night around there, I think its a bit of a camp and party atmosphere, maybe your thing, try googling.

Pick a dry weekend to go! otherwise she will be put off for life!!

Thanks to all replies, I'm going to try Debden House for a couple of nights. This should hopefully test  our equipment and our patience. Then we are off to walk the Thames Path.

When are you going there, I am due to visit there this Friday afternoon, I'll let you know what condition it's in.

I didnt go there to camp, I have to go there to inspect the play equipment they have on site, as the site actually belongs to the education department of the London Borough of Newham, and part of my job is inspecting play equipment for them.

There is one specific field that is kept for groups, they usually have a couple of big marquees on this field and it's used a lot by schools and other organisations.

They do also have a small cafe on site, but this isnt open all the time, mainly mornings and then late afternoons, but I think the timings of this change with the time of year.
